Purchase a World Trade Center or not?

As many of you know, my Spyderco grail is a World Trade Center. I have had a lead on one since before Chirstmas, but it has been slow going.

Now the person has offered to sell me a LNIB WTC for $465. This is a little higher than I had in mind, but I haven't been able to find any others for sale. The going price in the past seems to be $400 to $1,000.

Should I go for it or not? Should I ask for a lower price? How often do they come up, and how do other prices compare?

{P.S. Mods, if I can't talk about value because of being a Basic member (it's not my knife, though), please let me know.}

It sounds like this is not an impulse buy, as you have been on the hunt for many months!!!
So Go for it already!
:thumbup::) You can always get more money, but the knife is limited. You can always make an offer, but if it is worth it to you - get it. If not walk away. Only you know what it is worth to you. ;)

Dog sitting must pay really well in Colorado. :) If this is one that you must have, I'd say go for it.

Well, you already know the going price range, and where the one you're looking at falls within it. They're not easy to find for sale, and not likely to become any easier to find or cheaper as the years go by. So it comes down to whether you want it as a collectible to hold onto badly enough to pay the going rate, and that's something only you can answer.

The Spyderco World Trade Center seems to be tough to find (nobody wants to part with theirs) even though 2,819 numbered pieces were produced, first came out about 10 years ago and it's a classic in more ways than one.

For the record, considerably less than the planned 2,819 were produced because the WTC knife did not sell as well as Spyderco had hoped. As with a few other Spyderco models that didn't sell well, the demand and the price skyrocketed within days after Spyderco stopped selling them. AFAIK there's no official figure, but I'd guesstimate somewhere around 2000 exist. They are all numbered but, since some numbers at the high end of the range may have been requested, there are almost certainly gaps. So, even if a WTC Knife with a given number exists, that does not necessarily mean at least that many were made.

Here's a shot of my three. #1504 is the one I've carried every 9/11 since I got it...

I took the 2,819 production numbers from Spyderco's website. It'd be good to know exactly how many were actually produced.

That's a real nice set of triplets you have. :thumbup::thumbup:

I did not get into Spydercos until late 2005 and this cherished model passed me by.

Well, I guess I should jump on it. It was in an Ebay auction a few months ago, but no one got near the reserve. (Bidding stopped at $350; the reserve was $475.)

So I might as well get it, as it seems like I could always trade it for other things pretty easily...

You guys are not helpful to my bank account. :mad:
