Hello,
I am soon to be the proud owner of a BAS. I plan to use the khukuri as a hiking/camping companion when I conquer the woods of Northern Wisconsin. I thought of going the bowie or hatchet route but decided I wanted something with a little more versatility. I was also impressed with the durability and outstanding service that I have read about HI khukuris. Nice to know that there is still someone out there who understands how to make a good product and how to treat customers.

Welcome to HI country. I have been visiting with this group for about a year now (seems longer) and a finer group would be hard to find. While we are of diverse background, education, economic strata, and opinions, we are pretty much what people call "Americans", with a great number of "furriners" to make it interesting.

You will definitely like it here. Though I think that you made the most "wrong" choice in Khukuri. I really think you should have gotten a.......

Oh, and be careful about catching HIKV:cool:

Welcome to the cantina Dewingrm! Good choice on the BAS! One day though you must try the Ang Khola! Surely the "toughest knife in the world" Don't worry though you will have HIKV soon enough and befor you know it you will be spending all of your income on khukuris!!!!;)

dewingrm,

Welcome to the forums. Strange thing about khukuries, the more you have, the smaller the trees grow in your neighborhood. Good choice on the BAS, let us know how you like it.

Welcome aboard, the BAS is my favorite for backpacking. It nicely combines the positive atributes of a bowie and hatchet. You will not be disappointed.

Congrats on the new blade!! It will be special even after you own a dozen, or 2 dozen or like some around here 3 dozen:D :p

and welcome to the Cantina! Don't be a stranger!:D

I have the uncontrollable urge no need to buy another. The 25" sirupati or Kumar Kobra has entered my blood stream. Both remind me of the falcata that I brandished in my former life! Good heavens no, my miniscule college income cannot handle such a disease. I'm doomed!!! Thanks for the friendly welcome.

Welcome to the Cantina dewingrm. H.I. makes a Falcata, you might want to check it out.

I had no idea HI makes a falcata. Anyone know where I can see a good picture of one? I did not see a mention of one on the website. My college income is really in jeopardy now! Thank god for student loans and grants, or should I say thanks to all of you tax payers!

You are not the only poor student infected. You are in good company here, the Cantina is sort of like some 12 step meetings I have been to. "Hi, I am Bob and I have HIKV... I bought another today and I used my grcery money for it. I could stand to use the weight, I reasoned..."

Hello,
I am soon to be the proud owner of a BAS.

Welcome to the cantina, and good choice on the BAS. I just got my own yesterday, and it's an impressive blade. Two things to bear in mind - it's a lot bigger in person, and it's much much heavier than it looks in the pictures. One seriously impressive piece of steel.

As to HIKV, relax. Just put away spare change in a special place, and soon you'll find yourself breaking twenties for packs of chewing gum!

Must save for computer... must save...

BAS's (and other styles)vary from Kami to Kami somewhat in weight/thickness of blades--part of what makes owning a handmade blade so much fun:D I ordered a BAS from Uncle Bill and sent it back because it was SO light that I couldn't chop as well as I wanted. Rust's khuk is obviously at the heavy end of the spectrum. I would recommend a 15" Chiruwa (with wood handle also) AK. I have one that I shamelessly brag about on the forum, that is my first choice whenever I go hiking/camping due to its light weight, balance and fantastic chopping ability. Of course it doesn't chop like a 3lb GRS, but its alot easier to carry for long distances. I think most will agree that the AK's will out chop the BAS, but its all about what you really like in the end:D Disagreeing about which khuk. is best occupies alot of space here and probably always will--of course I'm right and their wrong!:p ;) :D

Ryan, check out the Khukuri FAQ under Variants: http://www.tx3.net/~howardw/Khukuris/Variants.htm The Falcata is the second one down on the page. IIRC Uncle Bill said that a shipment of Falcata's should be coming some time. Don't know if there all spoken for or not so you might want to ask him about it. I hope this helps,

It was hard not to jump right in. I like what I have experienced here, a comfortable place to belly up to! I will post when I recieve the BAS to tell you all my first impressions. I won't be able to do any serious work with it until I head up North on Friday, hope to have it by then (maybe wishful thinking). Thank you all for your info and for the friendly welcomes!
