I am about to purchase the edgepro Apex and was wondering if it would be better to buy the Apex 2 and a leather strop from lee valley or the Apex 3 with the polishing tapes included?

Hi Ryan,
I have been free handing for 28 years. I have tried every gizmo out there except the edgepro. I have only heard high praises for the edgepro, then again I heard the same praises for the skarb and the sharpmaker. I found them both unsatisfactory. If I would buy the edgepro and I would except for I have so many stones I can't justify the expense. I would go with the Apex 2. For me a polished edge is useless in my business. I like a knife with a little bite, not coarse but not by any means mirrored polished. Just my personal preference. I am also curious what other think. So I'm also waiting to hear what these enthusiasts have to say. Good luck with your purchase

I don't sharpen knives very well (no talent), so I need all the help i can get. For a years now the combination of Edge Pro Apex and Sharpmaker has worked well for me. When the knife is very dull or I want to reprofile, I use the Edge pro(not very often). To maintain sharpness I use the Sharpmaker, sometimes every other day. Hope that helps.

I'd go with #2, the leather strop is forever, the tapes will only last so long. You will get very good results with the strop.

With the polishing tapes your edges really comes out with a mirror-like finish. It is amazing. You don't need much pressure when using the tapes and the tapes are reuseable by just using a art eraser to clean the tapes after you are done with them.

I ended up purchasing the Apex 3. The eraser sounds like good idea, how many times can you erase the polishing tape before it goes bad?
