Hi Jeff and Mike,

Could we get a limited edition Izula - Pure Survival version. - Pretty Please ?
1) I am thinking a nightglow orange handle (to find the darned thing when I drop it - especially in the dark)
2) High polished stainless blade for mirror like signal device
3) The neck sheath to be made with ferroceum(?) embedded in the edge. If it is magnetic we could even use it for direction finding...
4) Have a depression in the micarta handle for bow fire starting and maybe some engraved angles - ala your bigger knife and the Hood Tool
5) Add a small cord to the hole with a nifty tiny whistle
And finally
6) Embed a small compass in the sheath

I understand the need for the knife which is more of a SERE tool which answers the needs of our armed services and low key users. However the tool you have designed is so outstanding it makes sense for the hard core campers as well.
The neck cord should make great lashing for an improvised spear....
Great work in promoting true practical survival, love your stuff and are an earnest user

Not trying to sound like a jerk, but that doesn't seem like a big enough improvement to warrant a new knife- more like custom job. If you can't DIY, I'm sure there would be someone here on the boards who could take an Izula II, strip and Polish it, make some orange micarta handles (g10?), make a bow divot in one side.

You could probably even chunk out some of the stock sheath and epoxy a small ferrocium into it as well. IF that doesn't work, you could just have someone make a kydex sheath with a firesteel and compass attachment. It doesn't seem that hard for someone who isn't afraid of a bit of hard work.

Just wondering, when you're actually using a knife for knife type applications - let's say cutting, how long will a mirror finish remain bright and shiny?

Furthermore, how many low key users (and esp. armed forces) would rather be dead than seen with a mirror shine blade (being dead and being seen usually amounting to the same in their kind of business).

+1, these are weird improvements, I mean, to me at least. I think it's shameful to beg Jeff & Mike to completely alter a knife because you want to.

Any particular reason you've posted this question already (nearly word for word) in the DPx sub-forum and now here? It's pretty unlikely that a knife with the features you describe would be made by ESEE. They tend to favor pretty simple designs.

I think ESEE and DPx are the best knives on the market today and fit my needs the closest. The marketing of knives directed at our armed forces is warranted but having black coated blades and handles are specific to them and "fans" and not for hardcore campers where these knives are probably mostly used.

I could make all of the mods - but I much rather have one made by the professionals and I would guess I am not alone.

AND there is never shame in asking for something - only in putting others down.

Cheers folks..

New ideas are always welcome, we talk about stuff like this all the time.

While we're discussing it, I'll add my .02 to your idea.

-Having too many things be an internal part of one item can become cumbersome and an issue if something breaks. Off the top of my head, having the compass embedded in the sheath as well as the ferro rod. When the compass breaks or the ferro rod is used up, now what? Are they replacable?

-If you're using a knife, the mirror polish isn't going to last long so I'd go wih a dedicated signal mirror.

-A squared off kydex sheath and some bike inner tube ranger bands could make a kit even more versatile than what you describe. Ferro rod, button compass, tinder, water purification tabs, sewing needle, mini LED light, all the basics could be attached with ranger bands. Check out a Neck Kit video buy a guy named Colhane on youtube. Pretty cool kit he has put together.

-So that leaves orange scales and a mirror polish. If you wanted a polished blade still, some paint stripper and some time with some polish could get you that, but I wouldn't depend on it for signaling, whether it's carbon or stainless. Then the scales with a bow drill divot; if you don't have the tools to make scales yourself, if you hunt around I'm sure there is someone making G10 scales for the Izula.

You're making quite the generalization there. I honestly believe that the actual "hardcore" (as you call them) users of these knives are much more "hardcore" than you. And I've never heard them complain.

I was curious about the hardcore camper thing. Most of the hardcore campers I know have a Winnebago and 400 channels and light their fire with the push button on the gas grill. :D

I think your best option is to just buy the orange Izula, buy some orange Glow paracord to wrap the handels and the ESEE fire kit, then get a custom sheath that can hold the fire kit. Then just polish the blade... I think that would solve all your problems.... Don't know what kinda hard core camping you do to need a spear, but I think this set up solves all your problems. Also u can get the sheath in orange

why not get an izula and mod it...

+1

You have the core item that you really need to start with here. From there with a bit of get up and go you can make this kit. A sheath w/ ferro Rod holder... you can do that. Glow handles (will cost you but Knife-Kits.com has them.) Bow drill divot = handles + drill press. It honestly sounds like you have a cool little system, and the great thing is you can put it together if you want to. I do have to agree on the mirror finish issue. Just get a signal mirror for that job. A blade edge is not going to hold up well for that.

God bless,
Adam

I want to be hardcore too if that's the case. And I have seen the remains of such campers in the TN mountains in places I'm pretty sure that they were helicoptered into.

God bless,

The idea of a polished stainless Izula is sound enough. Not sure about all that other stuff though. :D My Izula is an uncoated and unlasered and I have it polished up pretty nice. I do have to hit it with some Metal-Glo now and then to brighten it up, and the high polish makes it glide right through whatever I'm cutting.

Hey Mate, can you post some pics ? and where can I get my sweaty hands on one ? Thanks 42Blades in restoring some of my faith in trying for that Perfect Knife...

They were a limited SHOT Show exclusive a couple years back--it's not a standard option. That being said you can just take a normal Izula and use some paint stripper on it then sand/polish it up to around 1000 grit before using some polishing paste. :)

Unfortunately I don't have any really good quality photos of it right now. :o

You could buy an Orange Izula and simply strip the paint from the blade, then follow it up with a couple hours of love with a polishing wheel. Then buy a set of the micarta handles and some RIT dye to color them and your set! Like Adam mentioned adding some Ranger bands to your sheath and attaching a small survival kit would give you much more in the way of options and make it 10 times easier on you.
