Is either one any better? And why is it called a tung oil finish instead what's actually in it? Thanks I've never used pure tung oil and have always had a good finish from Formby's tung oil finish but if pure tung oil is better I'd rather use it.

tung oil finish has thinners and driers that allow it to penetrate better and cure faster.
the down side is that it takes longer to build a furniture grade finish.
if you're having good results, stick with what works. :)

Thanks. It does take a long time to get a good finish. I put a coat on and the next day buff with steel wool and add another coat. It usually takes a week of this to get it done right. I like this though because each time I buff out with wool it leaves me a very smooth finish for the next coat. After the last light buffing I let it sit for a week and then when its all dry the finish feels almost velvety if that makes sense. Thanks for answering. It would be hard to switch to another product but I was just curious.

Well then OP, I hate to burst your bubble but...

Formby's Tung Oil Finish doesn't have any tung oil in it!!!

It's not rated for constant handling/abrasion/sweat. Good for table legs and shelf kits though.

I was pimping Waterlox Tung oil on another thread- it's a phenolic modified tung oil that penetrates well and looks great...

Pure tung oil, like pure linseed oil is too much trouble and hard to dry- won't stand up to being handled or getting dirty...

This is the third season I've carried a knife with the Formby's finish on Maple and haven't had any problems with it so far. I use this knife a lot. It was a tester to beat up a little and now it's about the only knife I carry in the woods. I also have a few hunting buddies here that have my knives and theirs are doing well also. I know there's no tung oil in the stuff that's why I ask why its called tung oil finish. I'm not going to argue with you and I know there's better stuff out there but the Formby's is a dependable finish when properly done. Thanks for the input though and I will look into the Waterlox.
