Purpose of Spacer on Tai Pan

The Tai Pan and some tantos have a stainless steel spacer behind the guard. Is it there to help secure the Kraton handle cover forced over the tang?

Thanks! :)

The Taipan and the Magnum series Tantos have that spacer/bolster. I do not think it has any real purpose other than aesthetics
and maintaining the design length of the handle. If you go to http://hattoricollector.com and click on the Cold Steel Tantos on the left,
you can see them being made.

I believe the spacer there behind the guard keeps the guard tight.

The guard is a thin disk, and is press fit tightly, but there is not a lot of laterals support with out the metal spacer press fit behind it.

I thought that the guard was soldered on... If not, your explanation makes a lot of sense. Thanks!

It appears that both the guard and bolster are "press fit" on to the tang. Then the tang is epoxied, and the Kraton piece is forced on to the tang. The pommel is then screwed on. If the guard was soldered on to the tang instead of epoxied on to the tang, would the bolster become redundant?
