My Mom is 81 y/o. She has short term memory loss, but in all other ways is very healthy. She has some funky pocket dictionary that has a a simple word game on it that she plays. Probably from Radio Shack or someplace like that.

I'd like to get her something that has a dictionary, and several challenging word type games. I've read that games like that help keep the mind working.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Judy

Hi Judy,

My sugegstion would be something like this, it has several challenging word games and is said to assist in preventing further memory loss. Hope this helps:

Brain Age 2 looks good. I'm assuming she would need a Nintendo system? I've never had one, so I'm kinda lost here. I[m computer savvy but Nintendo stupid.

I've seen DS, DSi, and DS XL referred to.

edited: Never mind... I am on my "real" computer now and have done more research. Thanks for getting me started in the right direction!

Thanks,

Judy

Thanks, RevDevil,

I just ordered my Mom the Nintendo DSi XL, the Brain Age 2, and Puzzler World. I think she will get hours and hours of enjoyment of of these, and her brain will definitely get a work out.

She has a habit of just letting her husband remember stuff, since "Bob has a memory" and so she often doesn't challenge herself.

Several years ago I did make her some "Barbara's Memory" ledger books, so that she will write down every day stuff that happens and who she talks to, etc. They have proven very useful in that she has to make a point of writing things down, and she can also look back for information, in her own "Memory."

Thanks again,

Judy

I understand research has shown exercising your brain in new ways works better than just continuing to plug away at the same old game -- so keep an eye out for new games to get for her.

Thanks, Cougar, I shall do that. Puzzler World should keep her very busy for a while:

Key Game Features

  • Over 1,000 games.
  • Over 500 hours of playtime.
  • Create up to three profiles to track your performance and monitor your best times.
  • The "Stop & Save" feature allows you to continue challenging puzzles the next time you play.
  • Play puzzles in two games modes: Quickplay to jump in and play any puzzle; Challenge Mode for unlocking new puzzles and hidden surprises.
  • Games Include: Wordsearch, Fitword, Sudoku, Link-a-Pix, Crossword, Silhouette, Spot the Difference, Code word, Hangman, Equate, Jigsaw, Picture Quiz, Chain Letters, Missing Piece

And add to that her short term memory loss, and every day she has a new 1,000 games to play! I like that the Nintendo DSi XL is not only in color, but the screen is almost twice as large as the DS(i).

'splained here:

http://www.amazon.com/Puzzler-World...IENG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1293926519&sr=8-1

I was looking at other games to send her, but I figure I will give her a chance to get familiar with Brain Age 2 and Puzzler World before adding something else. Initially it is going to be a challenge for her to remember how to use the DSi. Computers and remote controls are often a challenge, and she gets frustrated and tired, so she will stop.

I'll let you know how it works out.

Thanks,

Judy

Nice going Judy. I hope your mom likes it.I've read lots of good things on it. Fill out the warranty/resgistration card and mail it in. This will give you a little extra piece of mind in case it lands in the link or on the floor.

I'm toying with the idea to give my mom a Kindle. She likes to read and enjoys crossword puzzles and other similar games.

RevDevil,

I'll definitely make sure the warranty/registration gets sent in. I have talked to my Mom about the Kindle, as I also thought about getting her one, but I think she likes having the book in her hand. And... she doesn't read the variety of books that she used to. She's been reading Jean Auel's Clan of the Cave Bear series over and over, and is waiting for the 6th and final book that comes out on March 29th. I left her a really good book when I was there in October, and she just isn't reading like she did. It could be her memory loss - she is familiar enough with Clan of the Cave series so most of it is in her memory already. I'm just guessing.

Get your mom a Kindle. My munchkins bought me one for Christmas, and I am really enjoying it.

Thanks again for the heads up on Brain Games. I would probably never have found out about it otherwise.

Well, my mom got her Nintendo DSi XL with both games: Brain Age 2 and Puzzler World. Her husband and his 15 y/o grandson (whom they are raising) took it over immediately. But she got it back and is really excited about it.

She was enjoying whatever games came with the DSi and didn't realize that she had the other 2 games (short term memory loss thing). I told her to have her husband load Brain Age 2 for her. Never having even seen a Nintendo in person before, I couldn't even tell you how they work, but the guys are tech savvy.

So, after several days of playing with her DSi, my mom decides that she also wanted a Kindle! She's really getting into this new technology stuff, and I am excited about that, because that means she will be playing with the Nintendo AND the Kindle instead of just sitting around being bored.

Her Kindle arrived on Friday. Tony, the grandson, complained to his Grandpa, "Grandma has a Nintendo AND a Kindle."

Grandpa replied, "She can have anything she wants."

That pretty much shut up the 15 year old! But my mom lets him play the Nintendo whenever he is home from school, because she has all day long to use it while he is IN school.

My mom is now challenging her brain while learning to use the Nintendo and the Kindle. Dang, that makes me happy!

She was so excited about the Nintendo that she wanted to get a protective case for it. So they went to Best Buy and now she is all excited because she picked out the CUTEST yellow and black case that has a handle and looks like a purse.

My mom has now cleared off the table next to her chair in the living room, and that is where HER Nintendo and Kindle are stationed. She says she doesn't mind sharing.

But isn't it cool that she is 81 years young/old and she is excited about learning her new tech toys instead of being frustrated about them and setting them aside?

Yippee!!!!

I'm really pleased for you and that technology has a place for your mom.

I highly recommend a simple and addictive game called 'Bejeweled'. They have it for your unit. Do a google search to see how it's played (learn in 20 seconds) and it's great fun.

Our family loves it. It's not real challenging, and that's its strongpoint.

Coop,

I love Bejeweled! I have it on my PDA, and I play it whenever I am standing in line somewhere. Facebook also has a version of it.

The version for the DSi is "Bejeweled Twist" which I have not yet played. Have you tried this version yet? It doesn't sound like it is as much fun as the original Bejeweled. I think I may still get it for my mom, since she hasn't played the original version - she won't know the difference.

Thanks, Coop.

^^^ No, I have an iPad and it's killer on that. I also have it on my Blackberry, but not quite as cool. Still OK. Yes, perfect for those I only have a few moments to kill times.
