Push button sheath?

I'm curious whether the sheath type that I often see with bowies has a push button to keep the knife in the sheath, or what exactly the working mechanism could be, as in-

A lot of his fantastic bowies have sheaths like this, and I'm guessing that the button at the top of the sheath somehow retains the blade inside.
Any help?
Thanks and happy holidays!

That button or stud is so you can stick the sheath between your belt and pants, and the stud keeps the sheath from sliding through. Some attach to a "frog" which is a belt loop attachment.
I use one for an EDC I carry and it works pretty good, and you're able to adjust the angle that the sheath hangs when you sit down, stand, etc.

The "button" that you see is simply a stud to keep the knife from sliding down past the belt (or the top of the pants) when worn in the wasteband.
The knives are generally retained by a good friction fit.
Hope this helps,
