In another thread, OwenM brought up the good point that most knife reviews tend to take place fairly recently after the acquisition of a knife. While these reviews can offer insight on quality control, out of the box sharpness, smoothness of operations, etc, they aren’t great for evaluating long term performance.

I have a handful of knives that I’ve used for a couple months now (some more than others) and I would be happy to write about some of them. I don’t want to take the time to write about all of them, but I’d be happy to review a few.

I wasn’t sure which ones to pick, however, so I figured, “Who better to decide than the people who will actually be reading the reviews?” So here’s the deal: each of you pick a couple knives (3 or 4) that you want me to review. The 3 or 4 that get the most votes will be reviewed.

Sound good?

Here’s the list:

Benchmade-
940

CRKT-
Bear Claw

Spyderco-
Calypso Jr.
Cricket
Lil Temperances
Lum Chinese
Merlin
Military
Moran drop point
Perrin FB
“Q”

P.S. – I’m sorry that they’re all production pieces that have already been reviewed many times, but these are the knives that I’ve used day in and out: these are the knives I have the most experience with. This post is up on GlockTalk and BladeForums: if you’re a member of both, please just post once.

Excellent idea, TOTC! Thanks for offering.

I'd like to hear in detail about your Benchmade 940, and Spyderco Lil Temperances (including the merits of leaf vs. trailing point).

Regards,

Johnny

OK.. my vote to three Spydies :-)

Lum Chinese folder, Perrin fixed blade, Merlin.

Interesting knives! I think there's not been much info about hook blades (Merlin) in extended utility use. Or much reviews on the other two either..

Hmm, how about comparison between Spyderco Military and Spyderco Moran? They have similar length and cutting edge, although Moran has more belly. Still, head to head would be excellent.
Thank you for offering this!

I'll go for the Lum Chinese and Moran drop point. If you'd like to start something on the Military, I'd be happy to add my two cents worth to the thread. I've been using the Military a great deal for over a year now.

Thanks TOTC. I'd like to hear about the "Q" and how the heck you clean that sucker after slicing a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. (The "Enquiring" mind of an "R" owner would like to know). Nice public service thread.

Good idea!

I would like to hear about the CRKT Bear Claw, the Lum Chinese, the Perrin FB, and the moran FB.

Great idea!
I like the 940 alot (carried one for several months as my EDC), and owned a Calypso Jr. ltwt., but sold it (the Calypso), without using it strictly because it felt "flimsy" compared to knives like the 940 and small Sebenza. I'm a big fan of full flat grinds, though, and may get myself into another Calypso Jr. before it's all over with. I've also never used VG-10. Any possibility of comparing the cutting ability of these two knives, along with perceived edgeholding and toughness based on use (is one significantly better than the other?)? I know the 940 is stronger, with a stouter handle, lock, and blade, but wonder how much performance that lower, thicker grind and thicker tip sacrifice in actual use. Do you have an opinion on the tradeoffs, and the advantages, either way?

I'd love to hear more about the Perrin, too:)

Lum Chinese and CRKT BEARCLAW! Curious about CRKT's much-maligned AUS-6M...

I'd like to see how they stand up to the Papa John's Test :D .

I vote for the Merlin and the Calypso Jr.

Maybe even a showdown between the two to show their strengths and weaknesses.
And to see how that hawkbill blade performs in everyday tasks.

Oh yeah, and thanks for volunteering your time and effort.
Allen.

MORAN DROP POINT.....

I am expecting one any day now....(UPS 2nd day air) and would like to see what I can expect of it....everything I've read sooooooo far looks good.

Ok, the results are in and I'm glad this received a positive response.

My first three reviews will be on the BM940, the Military, and the Moran DP.

I haven't really done head-to-head use so I don't think I'm going to write reviews comparing them against each other. Rather, they will be three separate posts going over general observations throughout the use of each knife.

After I do those three reviews, I will do a head-to-head of the two Lil Temperances. This one will be more comparison oriented.

Don't expect any of this too soon. Give me a couple days to figure out what I want to write for each one.

definetaly interested in a long term report on the lil temperance, as far as lockup, blade play, and overall dependability

also the lum chinese
