I think I put my Buck Pro Site discounts for 2013 to good use a few days ago.

I went for a week's visit with a great friend of mine in northern California. I'm always in charge of the BBQing when we get together, so I took along a brand new set of the newer model Empress Trio cutlery. The last time I was there, I didn't take any with me because of a lack of space, and was sorry.
Laurie didn't have a single knife that was really up to the task of trimming a tri-tip or any other kitchen chores for that matter, so this time I decided to take her the Trio set as a gift. She was thrilled and said she'd never used any knives as sharp as they were.

Her neighbor who also moved up there last year is also a long time friend of mine and we had three BBQ's together while I was there. That poor girl asked me what kind of sharpener she should buy because none of her kitchen knives would cut hot butter. I had her bring them over and wow, what a bunch of junk. She must have picked them up at the Dollar store or something because in my opinion, they weren't worth sharpening. I did give them a few licks on a steel that Laurie found in her stuff but I doubt that any edge I added will be gone the first time she uses them.

The next day I went to a couple of department stores around the area looking for a set of knives for her, but everything I found was really cheap looking or way too costly.

I'd been having a difficult time finding anything on Buck's site that I wanted to use my discounts on, so a light bulb lit up over my head. I got on line and ordered Laurie the Rosewood steak knife set that appears to be a great match for the Trio set and the other girl the seven piece chocolate Paperstone set. They are scheduled to be delivered today and although Laurie knows that I've ordered them, Moey (the other friend) is totally in the dark, so I know she's going to be really surprised.

I don't have any pictures of the steak knives or the seven piece set, but I've heard nothing but good about them, so they should be great for those two ladies. Here's the Empress set:

I'm looking hard at the Elk Handled set of cutlery with my discount. We have some Buck cutlery already (Chef's knife, paring knife) and Wife loves them. That set would be great and go with the rustic look of our kitchen.

Plumber,

You are a good friend for sure. I really like this set.

I've been thinking about doing the same thing. Someone posted some pics awhile back of the elk set they ordered and it was beautiful!

Reckon they'll give us an even greater discount if we all three order together? :-) I've been contemplating using my discount on the elk set also.

I bought the elk set last year but I've never used it. It's sitting in my display with a bunch of other stag handled knives.

I depend nearly completely on an older Empress trio with the micarta handles for everything.

That's what I remembered, seeing those in your display. I too use my trio set a good bit but we need new steak knives. Kind of wish Buck would replace the honing steel in their cutlery sets with another knife. perhaps a boning or small chefs knife.

That's a kind gesture. They will really like them. DM

Moey called me yesterday evening when she got home from work and Laurie gave her the set. She was just beside herself. She's never had a decent knife to call her own until she got these and couldn't be prouder. She said that she had tried all of them but the spreader so far. I feel great about it, well worth the expense.

My wish is that Buck would get away from the serrations on the new model slicers and steak knives and go back to the plain edge. I could also do with out the steel and the fork also. I never stick a fork in the meat I'm grilling, lets too much of the good juice run out!

Excellent Dave! That's a great gift! I went for a walk the other morning and found a spot where a traveling pilgrim from the South bedded down for the night. He left behind a made in China butcher knife that was surprisingly sharp.I cut two cactus paddles with it but on the third attempt the blade came right out of the handle. It's in my dumpster now.

Yeah, the fork could go as well. About the only time I use one is when grilling vegetables or sliding under bacon in the pan to flip it. I've got mixed feelings on the serrations. Since the steak knives will be coming in contact with china, stoneware, etc, the serrations might be the better choice as the protected sections of the cutting edge won't dull from contact with the plate/dish. On the other hand when it does come time to touch up the edge a plain edge would be easier for me to keep up.

We have a cheap set we got when we were first married over 20 yrs ago. I had always wanted a stag set intended to find some stag to put on the handles, but they're pretty crappy knives so I won't be wasting my time on that. So if we get the stag set I promise they will be put to use. Personally I like having the steel in the set. Its best to not let the knife get dull by regularly touching it up with the steel. The fork would get used some also.
I doubt you'd have to sharpen the serrations very frequently, I mean the cheapies at the steakhouses seem to last a long time and look how much they get used carelessly. Steak knives are the only thing I don't mind having serrations on.
