Put the serrations on the right side, not the left

Spyderco should put their serrations on the right side of the blade, not the left side as they do now. This would serve better the majority of knife users, who are right-handed. I guess that serrations are commonly on the left side for looks, maybe it photographs better, but the right side would be better functionally. So how about if Spyderco, in keeping with a "form follows function" philosophy, start putting it's serrations on the right side.

All in favour say "Oops".

If I recall correctly, Spyderco puts the serrations on that side for performance reasons, NOT for looks. On that side, when holding something and slicing/sawing through it, the serrations make the blade migrate AWAY from a right handed user; on the other, it'd be towards their hand.

I don't think it matters, personally. I don't whittle with my serrated knives.

Marty123 has a good point. I would like the ground side with the serrations to face the waste end, and the flat side to face the stock I'm holding in my weak hand and cutting to size, so I get the most accurate straightest possible cut.

Hey, c'mon! Throw us lefties a bone! We don't get to enjoy any of spyderco's top-end models, so at least we should get serrations oriented in our favor... :D

Having the serrations on the left side also makes the knife easier to sharpen. I prefer to see the point of contact between blade and stone when sharpening, and it is easier to press toward the centerline of your body from outside with precision than it is to push away from the inside.

Personally I´d like to see both. Can´t be that hard to manufacture blades with both configurations.

However, when it comes to Spyderco´s kitchen series, I agree with marty123. As a right hander I would much prefer having the serrations on the right side. It would make slicing and cutting easier, as you´d push the cut material aside, preparing for a new cut (like the chefs do).

The serrations have always been a controversial subject as to location. As James mentioned, it was a safety issue. Not possible to please all.

For years, we made left handed models of every model with the serrations reversed for the lefties, but we learned that the lefties didn't buy enugh of them to warrant keeping them in stock. Eventually they were dropped off and we phased into the left/right clips and left the serrations on the front side only.

Numberthree. I guess you could chase down some of the older models '81 - '94.

HI Sal, I think you misunderstood. I was just exhorting the others not to complain too loud. I like the serrations how you have them now, and would be disappointed with the serrations being switched over. They seem to work well for lefties as they are. My only plea for spyderco is to drill the upper-end models for left hand clip usage. I hate not getting to enjoy the best of what spyderco has to offer....
