Put way too much chromium oxide on my leather...

try using the back of a kitchen knife to scrape off ass much as you can
Putting too much on will not hurt anything other than your wallet. Fact is, you can strop on a flat bar of compound...
But if you want to remove some, WD-40 or lighter fluid on a rag and wipe it off, edge of a ruler will scrap it off.
All that's needed is just some 'color,' not a continuous thick coating, but using more won't hurt anything.

Thanks for your answers. I have enough to last 10 lifetimes. I put what I thought was a couple drops on a 6x10 inch piece of leather and it seemed to multiply as i started spreading it.
About 18 years ago I bought two bottles of Chromium Oxide liquid compound from HandAmerican. I think they are about 6-8oz bottles. I bought two because I didn't want to have to reorder too soon...
In the beginning I used waaaay too much, and finally realized just how much was actually needed to do the job.
I still have one and a half bottles left...
18 years... used too much at first... still have 3/4 of what I bought... Then go to Youtube and watch people melting thick layers of bar compound onto expensive leather strops... It's good for a laugh!
As you said, a couple of drops is more than enough, and you probably won't need to add more until you've stropped about 500 knives.

Definitely use sparingly amounts of compound as it seems that more is worse than less in this case. The WD40 is a good idea, possibly some rubbing alcohol as another option but do note that they can affect the condition of the leather to make it rather soft or dry. Later on try sanding off the top layer with some sandpaper for a fresh new start. Good luck.
