Got home last night, big problems with the computer. At first just trouble with Internet Explorer, but I had the same problem on Firefox and for non internet applications. If I typed an s, I would get =s, so on and so forth. Backspace resulted in an x, the space bar would refresh the connection. Virus with a capital V, huh? At first, I thought it might be a keyboard problem, but nah. Not that lucky. After Firefox opened about 50 windows, I knew I had a problem. It looked at one moment like someone was remotely accessing my computer:eek:. Other than getting Norton utilities, or taking it to someone, any ideas?

I hope that this question is in the right place.

stay away from norton. it is a huge memory hog. the pc i had it on ran fast until the day i put it on. download a program called cureit this link should take you directly to a download of it. ftp://ftp.drweb.com/pub/drweb/cureit/cureit.exe it looks like a spider when downloaded. start it and let it run the initial scan which shouldnt take long. if it finds something like a virus or trojan it will pop out a box (that stops the scan) giving you 4 choices. choose yes to delete. do this every time it pops out a box. if it finds something questionable it will just list it in the scan body window and keep running. these items need googled to find out what they are before doing anything with them. if you need help with running it i can give you a call and talk you through it.

If you can not download on your computer, use another and download then install program on an USB drive. Then run program on yours from the usb drive.

once you put the jump drive in the infected pc, dont put it back in the good one until its scanned by the antivirus and deemed safe. a member brought up the fact that some viruses will transfer to a jumpdrive. they suggested using a cdrw which can be erased and reused and wont transfer the virus.

I'd strongly encourage you to NOT use the infected computer on the internet until the virus is removed.

The primary purpose of many virus/malware infestations is to open the computer to even more viruses and spyware... Often it doesn't take long at all for a computer to become completely jammed with that crap.

Your best bet for tracking down the exact infestation and solution, is to Google search for your symptoms, unknown running processes, and questionable files. For example, sort the contents of the Windows and Windows/System folder by date - the newest added files will be listed last. See anything suspicious? Any files that originate to the time and date when you first started having problems?

Good luck,
-Bob

I hear ya SHS... my home pooter got hit BAD! My BIL currently has it and is disinfecting it. Got hit by 174 majors! I hope he can fix it...

i run avast antivirus and zone alarm which are both free. the pc i am on now has been running since 2003 when my friend frosty and i built it. the only time i picked up a virus was my own fault while searching for programs. i also use avant browser which i have set to eliminate any chances for me to get spyware.

That might be a good example of what I said above. It probably started out as one or two minor bugs that unsecured the computer to additional security problems, including rabid downloaders.

I restored a laptop to factory condition at work yesterday - had a couple of viral spyware programs running. I could have fixed it, but it would have taken hours. It was easier to reinstall everything from scratch, and then set up the computer with better security software.
