Puttin meat on table

I got one today too! a big, fat fox squirrel. my first time out small game hunting solo. I really REALLY need a rifle though, hunting with my S&W 22A-1 is kinda challenging.

Congrats on the kill! @Ken McCarty - I hunt squirrels with a longbow. It's been a while since I got one (missed by about 1/4 second Saturday) but they taste all that much sweater when I do. :D

@Planetcat - they are great. Squirrel stew is good stuff.

You shot a squirrel with a 303 british? I would use a 22 or a shotgun with #6 shot.Birdshot will work fine but the smaller shot are harder to find and pick out of the meat.

You have to bark them. Then there is nothing to pick out.

I'm amazed by your talent.. I took 4 shots to hit my 1 squirrel. I fired a grand total of 16 rounds today. shootin at squirrels is a lot different than paper targets, that's for certain.

as for cooking them, around my house we just make squirrel gravy and serve it over biscuits. or lightly bread and stirfry. they are delicious little beasties.

scottman it's been a while since i've heard anyone getting their squirrels by barking. i knew the practice had been done since the 1800s but forgot about that technique.sure saves a lot of meat. in central & w. texas not many hunt squirrels but for the ones that do , the meat is simply great.thanks for the great pics.

I didn't bark him. I shot him in the kill zone. Look at the blood. THe swaged buckshot went clear through, one step, and dead.

Heh - don't be too amazed. It's been a while since I bagged a squirrel but it's lots of fun trying. :D

Squirrels are great, we just skin em, and throw on the bbq pit, my goodness that is some good eating. Congrats on the squirrel or season doesn't open until oct 2, and I will be in the woods opening morning.

I love to squirrel hunt and eat squirrels so much I had a bunch of bumper stickers made that say "Squirrel is whats for supper" There industrial safety yellow with black outlining. I'll take a picture of the one on my bumper tomorrow and post it.

Cold rainy weekend up at Ludington State Park. Went camping with the family, and I took the 20 dollar slayer out. I think there are social classes among squirrels, no problem seeing reds when its raining, but fox 's didn't seem to show in the weather. Most shots were with cci cb shorts, 1 was with cci blazer for a long off hand shot, and 1 aguilla to finish off a on the run fox squirrel that I put a cb short into (he went past the hunting line so I had to be discrete in the tracking it down). All were shot while still hunting, having chimpmunks 5 yards away most of the time eating was telling me I was moving to the tempo of the woods.

Sorry for the blood, shots were a little lower than I would have liked-in and out, but took out the heart and lots of blood flowing while in the trash basket in my pack.

I like squirrel hunting as well. My favorite rifle is a savage 24C. 22 on top with a 20 ga shotgun below with no choke. I also like to snipe them with a 22 rifle or ruger pistol. I have also been known hunt them with a 32 cal Dixie Gunworks squirrel rifle flintlock. The 22 is easier to clean after hunting.
