Putting a Lanyard on a Buck 110

Hello fellas. I posted this some time ago on the Buck forum. I'd like to get some input from the "tinkerers."

Many Buck 110 owners feel the need for a lanyard, or fob, on the butt end of their folding hunters. Drilling into the knife's rear bolster is problematic; some have succeeded, others have messed up their knives and voided the warranty.

I wonder if a serious tinkerer might be able to fabricate a new rear spacer for the knife that includes a stubby projection with a lanyard hole. Obviously, this would also require disassembling the knife, so this project would not be for the the casual tinkerer. I include a crude rendering of the idea below.

I'd appreciate any feedback on the viability of the concept. And perhaps other more experienced metal workers might clue me as to the best metal, the ideal tools, etc.

Thanks!

Don't try the drilling. I did years ago and messed up my knife. Of course I did not have the proper drill press either...you'd have to be able to hold the knife very solidly in a vice and then use a stout drill in press configuration.

Better carry the 110 in the original sheath provided, hopefully a leather one.

nice concept, and good drawing, Tizwin. The protrusion on the butt of the knife could also be used to put a pretty good dent in someone's head if you got into a fight. :D

Thanks, Super Dave. I had a punyo in mind as well as a lanyard hole. (See Mercop's thoughts in Practical Tactical re: getting a folder to work in a defensive scenario.) On reflection, I feel that the protrusion should be offset a little one way or the other, as the classic 110 sheath may not close on it otherwise.

Frankly, I am intimidated by the idea of disassembling a 110, then getting it back together with the pins and bolsters as finely finished as before the work began.

I'll add here my admiration of the people at Buck for making such a fine knife at such a low price; and still in the U.S.A.!!

Trimcut, how do you plan to do it: Hole in the bolster or new spacer like the drawing? I'd like to have a landyard hole on one of my 110's. I was thinking of drilling a 1/4" hole in the bolster, until so many responses said it ruined the knife. If you clamped it in a machinist vise and used a drill press, where exactly would you drill the hole?

I definatly would not take the knife apart to put a new backspacer in. That could fudge up the knife also. I would put it right through the bolster. My father has cnc mills and regular mills that would all be very good for doing this. I would do it that way. very carefully. With coolant and the whole deal. I will have him help me since he has owned his machine business for 25 years. Let me know what you want to do.

You guys might want to check the old threads. There was one on this subject that showed the internals and after seeing that I understood why it's not a good idea to go drilling in the bolster. Only way I'd consider would be to drill out one of the brass pins and replace it with a brass tube.
