i'm tinkering with the finish on an AUS8 blade of mine. I've been at it for about 3 or 4 hours with 2000 grit sandpaper, but i feel like i'm at a place where my finish isn't getting any better. I've got a good, clean reflection, but still very visible scratching. What should my next step be? Should i move to an automotive polishing compound or some sort of metal polish? Thanks! :)

and to anyone watching sebring, best of luck to your choice team!

It takes 1 sec. to make a scratch, but it will take alot of time to get rid of it. Go back to a course grit, and address the scatches again.

If you have a nice even 2000 grit finish move on to a buffer with polishing compound.

I have been restoring stainless steel auto chrome for years and the best way to get a nice mirror finish (IMO) is to use a 3" D/A sander starting with 600-800 (for taking a satin or black finish off quickly), then go to 2000,2500. The D/A gives you and even swirl. Doing it by hand you will get a side to side scratch. Then go to www.eastwood.com and get some of thier stainless compounds. I have a bench grinder set up with a hard polish wheel & a finish wheel. I've done a couple black satin blades this way and they have come out mirror finish. Hope this helps. Of course then you have re-sharpen.

If there is still scratches, then your grit is too high, try go down to 600, then 1200, then 2000, then 2500, then go to a strop with chromium oxide.
