What happens to leather after it is wet and dried multiple times?\\

I'm not a knife maker of any sort (yet :P) but i have this new puukko
and this leather sheath. I wanted to wet the leather on the back and put a symbol for every great thing i do with the knife.
I would have to wet and dry the leather a lot so it would crack, but i figure i would only wet one small part, like the size of two pennies and hammer in a symbol to show my its the knife i took on my first camping trip. Which is true.

please tell me knifemakers. Will the leather crack? Can it be done to already dried leather? should i just use a wood burner?
Would a wood burner work better because i like that idea more.

Wood burner is a good alternative, I use one quite a bit. Just be aware not to linger too long in one area. Key word is Burner, it burns the leather so as little intrusion as you can is a good thing. Move quickly and dont linger too long in one spot.

Treat the burned area with conditioner and your good to go.

what type of conditioner would you recomend?
like shampoo conditioner?
or a leather conditioning wax, which i have.
After writing that i would guess its the leather wax but it might be neither.
Thankyou though for your answer ive been checking this like crazy for days/
