I am having some knives coated with TiGold's
BlackTi coating. I normally have our mark engraved on the blades with a panagraph engraver. I won't be able to do this to the BlackTi coated blades.

Does anyone know how to put your mark on a coated blade?

Can it be etched on?

How does Masters Of Defense mark their blades? They use the BlackTi coating.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Barry - I think the MOD and other companies use lasers to engrave the logos on the blade. As to who offers this service, I have no idea. When I visited with Paul Fox a while back, I got to see his laser engraver in action. He can take any CAD drawing (*.DXF files) and load it into the laser and run with it from there. I imagine that doing logos or wording on blade involves a similar process. Hope this helps.

BTW - is Darrell Lewis still the guy in charge at Tigold? Been a good while since I last talked with him, just wondering.

Why don't you just scratch it into the coating

Dex,
I will have to go to the trophy shop where we get our engraving done. They have a laser engraver that just might work.

George,
I am getting a matte black coating. The folks at TiGold are going to do a 220 grit AO beadblast to all of the blades prior to coating. That will eliminate our mark.

Matt,
If all else fails I may have to resort to that. I would rather not have to do it.

I was just kidding. I know that would kind of defeat the purpose.
What about engraving kind of deep in a spot that won't be effected to much by the bead blast? I don't know how much they would hit the tang, but what about on the spine. A logo wouldn't fit but it could say "jones knives" or something like that. Or if it has a pocket clip it could go there, kind of like the spyder logo on spyderco clips.
I'd look into finding a place other than on the blade so you don't have to work around the coating.

If i remember right talking to one of the coating contractors.. most of the companies were coating their blades in a light TiGold coating then coating in black. Once coated the black coating would be either laser etched or electro chemical etched away leaving a gold mark on a black knife.. It shouldn't be too hard to electroetch the coating away leabing a satin silver name or logo in the etch..

I know you guys use the trophy engraver meathod to mark your stuff,so if you need to you can send me the info, I can print you out some stencils and then we can get them electro etched for ya... I dont think the meathod you used before will show up very well..

What are the knives going to be made of? If they are stainless I think the electro etch meathod would work just fine!!

Let me know if I can help guys!!

Alan...
