Putting my BM Rift Back Together

For the life of me, I can't get my BM Rift back together. I have the one side put back on with the omega spring installed. Next up, I screwed in the spacers. Then, I put the blade back on. Now, I can't get the other liner over the spacers! I know I'm messing up somewhere so maybe someone can shed some light on this. Otherwise, this will be mailed back to Benchmade. Thanks for your help!

I get to this point in the picture and I can't progress:

I leave the spacer screwed in, but loose for adjustment. I can't get the second liner over the spacers. I feel like I'm going to bend the liner if I try to hard.

When you say "spacer" you're refering to the stop-pin, right? -I'm almost possitive I've had a Rift apart without an unusual issue getting it back together. I just traded mine off (like a dummy) or I'd be of more help. It does look like an impossible puzzle in the picture though.

After thinkin it through with the aid of that pic and my nearly worthless memory, I'm fairly certain it can be done by removing the blade from the equation. That should give you a bit more room to work. If that helps, you'll be able to get the blade/washers back in the handle with some patience, after the fact.
Another thought is that you might try to see if by sliding the Axis back it allows you a better angle to get the liner in place. You can unhook the springs to make that easier.
I'm sure it can be done, don't give up yet.

Yes, I can't get the liner over the stop pin (threaded spacer) closest to the the butterfly logo. It doesn't seem right that I have to use a lot of force. Does anyone know how much Benchmade charges to put it back together? Thanks!

I have to clean my rift anyway... Guess tonight is as good a night as any. I had it apart a month ago, but can't remember having the slightest issue.

I'll see what I come up with.

You need to free float the lock bar in order to get the liner over the stop pin. Then once you get the liner over the stop pin you can put the springs and lock bat back into place.

Ok... went and did it. I was just going to do it so I'd remember exactly what happens, but after I got it apart I decided to just take pictures. I'm not a photographer, but the pictures will hopefully be illustrative enough for their purpose.

The major thing that I do differently from what you are trying is that I take mine down to this...

first step is to sandwich the sides with the spacers and blade stop in place

IMG_0343.jpg

At this point I put the "action" springs 180 degrees from each other and put the correct one through the hole to the other side. Then its just a matter of turning the axis pin perpendicular to the handles and putting the springs back in their home

IMG_0345.jpg

you will end up with this

IMG_0346.jpg

next I put the pivot in place so that it is flush with the inside of the liner

IMG_0348.jpg

put the first washer over the hole and push the pivot through a little more

IMG_0349.jpg

next comes the blade, leaving the gap between the blade and the opposite liner

IMG_0351.jpg

slide the other washer between the blade and the liner... you can use the pocket clip to help...

IMG_0353.jpg

IMG_0355.jpg

ok... at this point if you followed my directions to a T... you messed up, because I messed up. I forgot to put the handle scale on the pivot first. If you happen to do that too, just pull the pivot CAREFULLY and you'll be left with this...

IMG_0357.jpg

now you can just add the scale, and push the pivot back through and you'll be here

IMG_0358.jpg

Pop your other scale on, put all the screws back in, reattach your pocket clip then you're done!

Hope this wasn't too long and/or boring. And I hope it helps. The Rift is one of my favorite Benchmades. I bought mine after I graduated Basic Training and have carried it every day for the last 2 years.

Insert gratuitous knife picture...

stephenthesuave,

Thank you so much for all your time in putting up your instructions. It's funny because I've never had problems with my other omega-springed knives. It looks like it was operator error on this one, ha ha.

I'd assemble the liners, spacers/stop pin and Axis mechanism, then attach the scales, putting the blade, washer and pivot assembly in last.
