Putting on a new edge...

I'm thinking of putting an additonal edge on my full-size Kabar, on the back recurved portion of the point starting from the top of the spine. I saw a similiar thing on an Ontario knife and I thought it was a real nice feature. My Kabar eats a lot of hardwoods, and this would guarantee that I always have a fine razor edge if I need it.

So is there any specific reason not to do this? I guess it would weaken the point a little, but would it be that bad? It's not like I ever stab things with it anyway.

My K-Bar came with the backside sharped, I just made it real sharp. The main edge has a covex edge for chopping and heavy duty cutting. The back stays sharp for everything else. Works out good. The only drawback is that here in Kalifornia, its considered a double edged knife, wich is illegal.

Another thing is if you want to baton with your knife, it will limit what you can do and how you can do it.

ah yes, as is the kabar is just a harmless toy, but with that small back edge sharpened...i'll never get knife laws

as for batoning, the part i would sharpen i wouldn't hit with a baton anyway

dougk16 - Sharpening a false edge will bake the knife double edged and depending on where you live a double edged knife can be very illegal to carry.

"very illegal"...as opposed to just a little illegal? ;)

what would happen kamkazmoto, both general case and worst case, if u were caught in your area with this kind of modified kabar?

where i live i think i could carry around a giant double-edged bastard sword and it wouldn't be too much of a prob besides the strange stares :)

Carrying a double edged knife in California is a felony. What would happen would probably depend on the circumstances and the LEO that caught you.
