Putting the torch to Ti

I've researched this for a little while, but I want to get some opinions before I mess anything up.

1.) Where can I get some Ti scrap to practice with?

2.) When using a torch, what kind should I be looking for, a jeweler's torch or one from the DIY store?

3.) Should you keep the flame constantly moving on the area or do you concentrate on one specific spot?

4.) Once color is obtained...do you quench with water, just pour it on with a cup or use a spray bottle and mist the piece? Or do you let the air cool it?

5.) I've heard people either using pliers or a hanger to hold the Ti and also just laying it down on a piece of metal or brick...what is a good method?

6.) What is a refractory brick? Do I need one?

7.) Do you have to torch both sides of the Ti? If you do only one side will the color change on the other side?

8.) If you only torch one side (see above), lets say for a handle slab, do you torch the outside or the inside?

9.) Material prep...sand blast or polish to high shine before torching?

10.) If I missed anything, would you be kind enough to elaborate...

I Appreciate the time for looking at my questions. All advice and opinions welcomed.

Thanks,

I second Jeff's recommendation, Peter Atwood did a great job of compiling a lot of information together and then actually showing you how to do the stuff on video....it is definitely a worthwhile investment!

Chuck Bybee @ alpha knife supply
2.) When using a torch, what kind should I be looking for, a jeweler's torch or one from the DIY store?
I use an acetylene torch, but have used a propane torch....a decent sized torch is nice

try to keep the flame moving, and keep the distance of the flame consistant
4.) Once color is obtained...do you quench with water, just pour it on with a cup or use a spray bottle and mist the piece? Or do you let the air cool it?
Let it air cool.
5.) I've heard people either using pliers or a hanger to hold the Ti and also just laying it down on a piece of metal or brick...what is a good method?
I just put it on a piece of steel on my shop floor
6.) What is a refractory brick? Do I need one?
nope
7.) Do you have to torch both sides of the Ti? If you do only one side will the color change on the other side?
I just do one side, the heat goes through the ti for me.

8.) If you only torch one side (see above), lets say for a handle slab, do you torch the outside or the inside?torch the outside, if you mess it up just sand it off and redo

9.) Material prep...sand blast or polish to high shine before torching?
i try to get a polish going on
10.) If I missed anything, would you be kind enough to elaborate...
Make sure the ti is clean of oils dirt etc.
If you get the ti to a colour that you like stop heating, because once the colour changes again you cant go back unless you start over.
