You know, I've been pondering my kardas lately.
I'm rather enamored of the Finn puukko style knives for their cutting ability and handiness, and wondered about contacting HI to have them make one.
Then it hit me like a greased anvil -- "Hey stupid, they already ship them with just about every kukri."
I never put two and two together. I had sharpened mine with a conves edge, and wasn't all that impressed with them.
So I dug out my files and stones and put a Scandi grind on them -- you know, one bevel from about 2/3 of the way to the spine, to the cutting edge, aharpened and honed it down, and lo and behold, it's sharp as hell.
I was just ate up with the dumb-arse i guess,a nd thought everything had to be hard use if it was from HI. Finally got it bored through my skull, that they use these knives for their fine work, and with an appropriate edge, they work well. The blades may be softer than we tend to go for over here, but for the duties the Kardas are intended for, the blades are hard enough, and very easy to sharpen. Besides, you have the kukri for the heavy work.
Don't know why I didn't realise this before. . .
I am still somewhat unimpressed by the softness of the Chakma, so I decided to put two Kardas in my 20" CAK's scabbard, since it's the one that usually goes with me.
