You guys that carry and/or use puukos, what kind are they?

I know I have heard at least one or two in here that seem to swear by them. Cougar Allen, you seem specifically to come to mind.

I have one KP. "Silver steel". A really excellent knife with a traditional hanging wood lined sheath. The blade is one of the sharpest and best cutters I have. But it wasn't cheap and I'm veru reluctant to use it hard and take it near salt water. That reluctance will be remedied when I get another so I can keep one to admire and use the other mercilessly.

I was just looking around at some KP's. I would probably be hesitant to use one of those as well, for the prices I saw.

My "two custom sheaths so I can carry it everywhere" puukko is a Marttiini Jouni. It's a great knife, and the price is very reasonable. The reindeer bone and birch make a mellow, elegant look, and fills my hand really nicely. It's a very civilized city knife.

The KP Jouni is gorgeous, but at nearly $600, I can't see buying it for a user.

Rock
Catch JKM in the chat tonight.
He's our forum expert and usually has a fine selection of knives in stock also.
It's not going to be the first night we've had to sit through a couple hours Puuko talk in the Bf chat. ;-)

I carry a Kellam Heidi most of the time when I hunt. It's a great knife and can be gotten for ~$100. I bought mine at Blade '99 afterhave a very long coversation with Jouni. It has forged carbon steel and birch. Craftsmanship is a little lower than some nice knives, but it cuts very well.

I bought my Brusletto back in 1973 and they don't seem to make that exact model any more, but they make similar ones. Mine has a birch handle, full-length tang, no guard. The handle and leather sheath are decorated -- looks like some of it was done freehand with a woodburner, some of it branded.

You can see a great assortment of puukkos at www.chaicutlery.com

Sorry I missed you guys on Chat. I'll try sometime later.

Thanks for all the replies. Definitely a good selection at Chai.

I have a Fiskars OTS 3 3/4"SS. Black leather sheath plastic lined. The belt loop has a button hole that fits the side buttons of my overalls. This knife has been used for tow years in the construction of my Shop. Not the coolest or the best but has been a very good utility knife.

Cheers,

ts

I frequently carry a Roselli Carpenter's puukko.

It's a great knife and just a little bit over $50, although I'm thinking about upgrading to the one in UHC steel, which costs around $100.

The Carpenter's (or Nikkarin) knife looks more like the stereotypical "puukko" than other Roselli knives ( www.roselli.fi ), but I've heard good things about the rest of their line.

I also occasionally use a Helle Polar at my desk. It's not really a puukko, but it has the same general design. Handy little thing...

I've got one of the old Hackmann puukos with the nylon diamond shaped handle and brass end-plate. Also and Hackmann red nylon Finnish balisong folder. Love 'em both -Brian
