Finally found time to work on some axes this weekend, and actually remembered to take some photos of the process. The head is a 3 3/4 pound P-V wedge pattern with a hardened poll. I really like the way it came out.

Evidently I need a lesson on removing attachments from a post, they won't go away. They were supposed to start at the beginning :) See next post.

The handle is a 28" that I had started to hang something else on and started to octagonize but then changed my mind and tossed in the corner.

Deepening the kerf. It could accomodate a very tall head.

Main part rasped down. I like to get the line of the head done and then clean up the shoulders.

Test fit.

Still kind of snug.

Seated.

Wedged. (love that wedge pattern look!)

Working on finishing the octagon. It's not real pronounced but you can feel it.

Shaping up. It's hard to see but there's actually a little quilted figure to the handle.

Oiled up.

Hold your computer sideways. Will put up a better finished pic of this and some others later.

Nice work. I like the straight handle. Here's a PV MFg co. axe that I did

Thanks guys. It's a 3 3/4 pound head, minus some rust and filing. I really like the feel of it on that handle. OAL was 26" when done, which I realized I really like for wedging over firewood size trees. The hardened poll showed up after a vinegar soak but I didn't get a picture. The wedge is one of a handful of decking cut offs that were about 3 inches long and 6 inches wide. Not much else you could do with them. It's some bizarre tropical hardwood, I can't remember the name. Heavy and hard. Kind of brittle but so far they seem to work well. Am nearly out though, will have to find a good replacement wood...
