Pyroceram vs. Platen Cushion

Dan

I got some of the platen Cushion stuff and Mr. Hull is very correct in what he says. Your belt sander will run much more smooth with it on the platen, but the graphite wears away so that you no longer have a flat surface you just end up getting a bunch of
ridges and valleys in the material.

Dan,

I've used the metal platen, pyroceram, and leather. Tryied the graphite on someone elses machine.

The metal or pryoceram are for grinding. The cushion is great for blending and handle work.

I have the pyroceram for a long time, until the work rest cracked it. (OK I did it putting the work rest on.) I'm back to metal. The pyroceram is fine but you have to ground yourself to the machine - generates a nice static charge.

(I run the wire into my socket. Didn't have a good connection once. Had a strange feeling in my foot. Like needles jabbing me. I did a very interesting dance.)

Fine Woodworking had a plan for a horizontal sander with a very narrow bullnose, using graphite for the bearing at the bullnose. Would be cool for fingergrooves and such.

I like the pyroceram. When doing small pieces you can hold it with a magnet against it, you can not do it that easy on a steel platen.

I use the pyroceram on my BIII. I like it because I know it's flat, and will stay that way.

I tried the platen cushion and it didn't hold up for me. I threw the piece I had left in the trash. I've been using the pyroceran for a good while with no sign of wear. I think for flat grinding, which I seem to be doing a lot of lately, it's the only way to go.
