Well I'm coming up pretty dry on the search feature and pyrometers! How do they work, how would you go about installing one on a propane forge and where would I find one at a reasonable price? I know you can get them at ceramic supply places but I'm operating on some limited personal knowledge of the subject ad what to look for! Thanks. -Guy Thomas

Thanks Ex, I beleive I've also run across those sites using search engines. Still I really don't know what I'm looking at or for there (i.e: digital, analog, thermocouple pyrometer, handheld, surface probe, etc. etc. etc...)
I'm trying to get some really basic information on type, function and what to look for. A dummies guide to pyrometers so to speak! -Guy Thomas

Although I am a potter in my spare time I have to confess that I don't know a heck of a lot about pyrometers. What I do know is that the manual type which are analog are not very accurate. If you are needing to get to within a narrow range of degrees then you really need to get a digital pyrometer. Fluke makes a good one for about $200. I do not know of any other sources.

I do seem to remember someone saying on the potter's news group that a multimeter and a thermocouple probe could be rigged up but I don't know much about it. Look up Nils Lou on a search engine. He is the undisputed pyrometer expert.

Guy, I use a pyrometer on my gas forge. I bought it from Omega. I called them after looking though their huge catalogs and the tech. man told me what to buy. It was the economy hand held digital with a cermic thermocouple. It also came with a low heat thermocouple that I use for everything except the forge. It has more features than needed but is very accurate up to 2400 degrees F. I weld damascus with it and can adjust the fire for forging and normalizing ect. The bill was about 150 bucks a couple years ago. Email me if you more info. Bruce

Ah, now that's the kind of info I'm looking for! Thanks, Bruce look for an email from me.-Guy Thomas
