I have been running the camera past the point where the low battery icon appears (flashing), even resulting in the camera shutting down on several occasions. Regular AA batters (nonrechargable).

Question: can this damage the camera in any way?

Thanks.

Won't hurt a thing, just try not to store it with the dead batteries. Almost half of the time I've had to toss a flashlight or remote control or something it's been due to leaking alkaline batteries.

Get some Eneloops. They will last longer in the camera and can be recharged bunches of times. Cheaper in the long run.

I'm running Eneloops now .My camera is the Sony H1 which will take AA rechargeable or AA alkaline .They do say alkaline may not operate all functions so there is a difference . The newer H series Sonys use a proprietary battery but the AA has a benefit of being found anywhere. Always carry at least 1 set of extra batteries and memory card.
BTW certain things use up batteries quickly such as looking at photos you've just taken !

I use those in all my Nikon digital cameras as well as my Nikon Speedlights...I wouldn't use any other battery in 'em at this point.

digital cameras EAT batteries for all meals of the day lol

nah, it wont hurt it as long as they aren't stored for long periods of time

but if i were you i would get some rechargeables

I love my eneloops but recently got in a tight bit when I got a new portable speaker for the phone that uses AAA batteries and got some duracell 1000mah rechargeables from the tore instead of waiting for a shipment of AAAs, ran them through the break in cycle on my charger and was pleasantly surprised that 3 of them were around the 1030 mark with only on below at 983. Which is a big difference from what I expected from my experience with energizer rechargeables.

What rechargers do you guys use?

I use a maha C9000. An interesting note about the duracell rechargables, at least some of them were made by sanyo, if they were the precharged type the early ones were actually just rebadged eneloop cells. Folks nicknamed them "duraloops". They eventually moved to a chinese supplier's LSD cell, still okay but no eneloops.

I use Sanyo Eneloop AA and AAA's in flashlights, radios and the like. But for some reason when I put a pair of Eneloop AA's into my Canon A530 camera, the batteries go flat with in 2 weeks even if I only took a couple pictures. On the other hand, a set up Energizer Advanced or Ultimate Lithium AA's will last me months. I can take about 1000 or more pictures and even leave the camera for a month and the batteries still work. Guess my camera hates rechargeables, but my flashlights love them. YMMV.

Crap, I left my camera in my car (inside a garage) with several other high-value targets. Gonna be gone for a week, hopefully those don't leak (regular AA duracell, fresh or relatively fresh, put them in couple days ago).

Can't get to the garage as they are paving the road in front of it.
