Q about blade length...

Please check initial thread HERE.

Allright, I´ve found a custom maker willing to make the type of Trapper slipjoint I want. I know what type of filework I want on it and it´s no problem from the makers point of view.

The problem is bladelength. The model in question has about 3 - 3.5 inches long blades. Isn´t that a bit too long for a Trapper or is it "standard" for that type of slipjoint?

I´m thinking of ordering the knife with maybe 2 3/4" blades. Too short?

I´m somewhat good at estimating how long and wide a blade can be on a locking folder but these non-locking slipjoints is a totally new world. I´m goint to the local knifestore today to see if I can fondle some production models with different blade lengths.

Any help/opinions on this matter would be appreciated (and I promise to post a pic of the knife when it´s finished). :)

A "standard" sized trapper ranges from 4 1/8" to 4 1/4" closed with around 3" (edge measurment) blades. (Including the tang in the blade measurements easily go to 3 1/2".) They are considered a pretty large pattern. Then you have jumbo trappers and small trappers. Looks like you are wanting a small trapper pattern and for pocket carry and that might be a better choice than a standard size.

Bastid,

Thanks for helping out. I also got some really good help from the maker (so far I´m very impressed with the level of service). I went with the 3 inch blade, about 3 1/4 inches closed. So it will be a "small" traditional Trapper.

Now I´ve got about four months of waiting... :)
