Q about cleaning an older gun

First of all, I have already checked and it's not worth anything spectacular so i am not afraid of cleaning and using it.

It is an older Mossberg .22 longriffle model 144. It has to be at least 50 of 60 years old. My father had it when he was young and a sibling had it before him.

Around 1992 it was cleaned (by me with help from a friend who was into guns) and hasn't been fired for probably 30 years.

Anything I should do to it at this point besides clean out the cobwebbs? Should i take it to a gunsmith and have them go over it?

Good news..YOU can do it!

Take the action out of the stock...take a rag and wipe off the stock and action with a slightly damp cloth..then dry both. Get an old toothbrush, some rags and some cheap brake cleaner and hose down the action..keep the BC away from the stock and any plastic parts as will eat them. BC will clean down to BARE metal so you'll have to wipe down with a light coat of gun oil - RemOil or CLP - or it will rust.

Use RemOil or CLP to clean the barrel from the breech[chamber end]..re-assemble and go shoot it.

Maybe forget the BC and just use RemOil or CLP.

Let us know how it comes out.

in my high humidity climate, I get better rust prevention with Birchwood Casey's "Barricade" formerly known as the artist "Sheath"

Interesting old scope??? Looks similar to the old mossberg .22 my dad owns. My dad's has aftermarket peep sights, no scope. I don't know the model number but my dad used to shoot it when he was a kid...60+years at least. That's the greatest thing about old 22's, they might rust away but even with a a little care they don't die. It'll easily last another hundred years.
