I just finished making a 6" (2 3/4" blade) D2 bone-handled whancliff fixed blade, and I'm really happy with the way it turned out--so much so that I think it might replace my long-time carry BM 940. I say "might" because I don't know how convenient it is to use a pocket fixed blade. The 940 is a one handed knife. With a pocket fixed blade, it seems that you would need to remove the sheath from the pocket before reinserting the knife. You would need two hands to do this. So--am I right about this. Or am I missing something? How do you guys carry pocket fixed blades? Is it as convenient as a one-handed folder?

Several people (Don Cowles and William Henry) make a pocket sheath with a clip on it. Don's fixed blades can be removed and replaced from the pocket sheath with one hand.

A.G. Russel also makes a backpocket sheath called a Woodswalker.

Don's pocket fixed blades have just about replaced all my folding knives. Some of his knives even fit comfortably in a shirt pocket.

If the sheath opening is at the same level or higher than the pocket, it is simple to do it one handed. If it's lower than that, it's a pain in the butt (a sharp stabbing pain in the hip/thigh too if you're not careful).

The next step for me is to make a sheath for this particular knife. Those William Henry pocket clips that Don Cowles uses would be perfect. Anyone know were I can get a couple of those clips?

I use the static cord method and it works well. The sheath actually comes out of your pocket using this method.

I've been thinking about coming up with some sort of clip system.

I pocket carry puukkos on occasion. They’re kept in a pouch sheath in the front pocket of my jeans. The top of the sheath catches on the seam of my pocket when then the knife is drawn, leaving the sheath inside the pocket. If the leather is stiff enough (it should be with any pouch sheath), the mouth of the sheath will remain open. Putting the knife back in the sheath one-handed is no problem; you just have to look down.

I have always loved the idea of a Pocket Fixed blade. However, the execution of the sheath and the act of getting the knife in and out have put me off on most examples.

You may want to contact Josh Graham of Graham Knives (www.grahamknives.com), best known for his Razel knife design, but he makes just about the nicest Pocket sheath that I have seen. A Good man that will help you out I'm sure.

Static cord: basically you tie a piece of string to the bottom of your knife sheath, and the other end of the string to your belt loop. You put the knife and sheath in your pocket tip-down, and when you yank the handle of the knife, the sheath comes out too. Then the string pulls the sheath off the knife and you have a drawn knife in hand and an empty sheath tied to your pants.
