Q about Lanyards

I have a bunch of paracord and have been making many lanyards but i just relized that i have never removed the inner strands of string from the cord. I was wondering how much difference it will make when trying to put the lanyards on some average size folders. I would check it now but im at college and all of my knives save 2 are at home so i cannot test to see how they will fit.

I've never removed the inner cords...

Seems to me that when I'm using a lanyard it's got two purposes:
1. extra fob to hang on to & grip the knife/secure it to my hand
2. store some cord in case I need it

If you remove the inner strands, doesn't that make the cord generally weaker, and therefore less useful on its own (thereby eliminating the possibility for reason #2)?

Peace.

It would but unfortunately 550 cord doesn't fit in many lanyard holes. I'm not sure why this is.

I have managed to get it through some. It took a lot of time, force, and cursing.

My cord is mostly 450 so how much difference does that make in regards to the size of 550?

actually spectra cord imho works better for fobs on most folders, i like them on tip ups to help draw them from pocket,

if ya remove the inner strands the std paracord is a little thinner and a little weaker too i guess, but its still plenty strong for a fob, i dont think i could break a peice with my hands anyway, std cord w/the inner strands removed is what i use for a fob on larger folders like the strider AR, buck/strider and extrema ratio, the spectra looks too small on them.

just depends on what looks good to ya, personally if i am using the std cord i remove the innards........

Thanks for your replys...spent about 2 hours last night undoing most of my lanyards and takning the inner strands out then remaking them

I think that if you have the knives it's much better to thread the cord through first, then tie/braid the lanyard, see if you can get the cord trough with the strands, if you cannot or you like a flat cord look take the strands out, you can also use accessory cord from climbing shops which is available in several diameters including much thinner than paracord.

Here's a fob tied into the knife with simple braided macrame cord (no inner strands to begin with).

To get around this problem I melt the end of the cord and then roll it on a hard surface while it's still soft to give it more of a pointy end. It's worked on all my knives so far.

If you need to thread a loop of cord through a hole, use a length of strong string, thread it through the cord loop, fold it and pass both loose ends of the string through the hole, pull on the string loop (you may tie the ends together to make it easier) and force the cord loop through.

I worked with para cord for years when I was in survival equipment in the AF (back in the 80's-90's). The inner cord is the strength of the cord. Such as 500 cord is 550 lb strength. We use to remove the inners cords and make fobs, lanyards, etc. out of the outside cord. In fact we, and others (active duty) like us had been doing that for years before people even knew that you could make fobs of para cord. Removing the inside will not significanly affect the strength unless you are planning on parachuting. It is just as strong for a fob, or for a lanyard without the inner core strings.

Also, when you remove the inner cord, sear the ends to avoid too much fraying.

Wrap something like masking tape around the end so that it extends past the end by an inch or so. Then twist it into a small point. It will go through small holes easily. But remember that less tape means less bulk, so don't use any more than is necessary.

Hey Luis,

Got any links for a "how to" on that macrame ball you created ... fancy giving that one a go :D

Thanks,

Joe

The Link given by TedGamble for the Monkey Fist is a good place to look around for knots and such.

Here´s another place with nice fobs and some instructions:

Luis, did you put a lanyard hole in a buck 110? If so, how?
No, that's a "Winchester" brand clone that came with the lanyard hole.
