Are those from lead deposits on the bullet (I was shooting FMJ, by the way) from the powder, or from friction of bullet going through paper?

Thanks.

Hi,

Could be some marking from friction. Most likely caused by fouling rubbing off.

I'd guess powder deposits. Here's why: With a PERFECTLY cleaned barrel, the first shot will leave powder deposits on the inside of the barrel. With subsequent shots the deposits increase and the bullet will pick up more and more of these deposits. Thus the ring around the hole.

Pure speculation, but it sounds good!

when i used to shoot a muzzleloader a lot i would see the same dark rings. i was shooting a patched ball so there wasnt much of a chance for powder residue to get on the ball. try this and see if its the same. get a 22 round and a piece of paper. use it like a pencil to write something on the paper and compare the 2 and see if they are similar.
