How far ahead do you plan your moves when you are manipulating freely ?

When I work with my nunchakus (fast ones, with short handles, long chain) I find that I have "groups" of 1-3 separate moves, and a bunch of "transition moves", and then I can just go on forever end vary these. So I "plan ahead" maybe 1-3 moves, or 0.5 - 1.5 seconds.... very roughly...

But the balisong is just so damned fast !!!
I think I'm gonna have to learn katas of many more moves, maybe 10 or so, and then ways to combine these ?

Freestyle play? The knife tells me what the next move is. Sometimes I start to think, gee, I haven't done a propeller spin lately, and so I'll start to look for an opening, but I still don't try to make it happen.

This is when new stuff comes up. The knife will move in a new way and I'll say, "I haven't seen or felt that before. I'm gonna try and isolate it and perfect it."

I'm with Chuck.

I don't really plan moves. Instead, I let the Balisong fly and just try to keep a feel of where IT wants to go.

The only thing I try to be consciously aware of is........ open or closed.

Because......
getting 'em open
is half the fun!

When freely manipulating I prefer not to think about it at all. It happens as it happens.
