Hi!

How long does a typical balisong last? or maybe there is no such thing... My cheap one is showing sings of heavy wear after 2 days of flipping. I'm a newbie, so maybe I'm working it the wrong way.
Anyway, a BM42 is pretty expensive, and not for everyday practise, I suppose?
What should I buy to do newbie practise with, a Jaguar? How long will it last? I don't like... want to buy a new one every month... ?

I kind of expected my girlfriend to freak out when I started flipping the knife, but she didn't raise an eyebrow, now isn't that a cool girlfriend? Or maybe she has just given up hope about me... after I've wrecked so many things in our home with my constant nunchaku twirling...
Any ideas on how to convince friends and girlfriend that flipping a balisong is a cool and legit martial art ? 8-)
I sent some balisongextreme.com videos to a friend and he went like "ok, ok, enough!!" what's with that?? 8-)

Sorry, didn't mean to ramble so long!

As a once eager practitioner / now an average player of balisong, I can't give you a specific time of total wearing out. But a BM stands half a year until the latch misses the handle (off from the center more than half inch) where it takes one or two month with a decent other manufacturer's bali with various 500 flip a day. Twisting motion will give more stess than flipping within the plane.
Please take care, an el cheapo butterly knives with mold metal handles will break at ANY time now.
I have had only one pin breakage on 5 inch Taiwanese, so I'm too lucky guy to duscuss pin endurance. There are much more qualified and knowledgeable people around.

Before there is too much play, blade pin
digs deep into the handles. You'll know half of the knife's "life" has passed when the handles pinch (or "bite" you may call it) your palm.

cheapies can last you a while (a year or more) once you replace the pins (and as long as it doesn't have inserts, otherwise the handle is too weak and it will break). BM balisongs should last you a very, very long time, especially since the 42 has Ti handles it will be a lot harder for the forks on the handles to splay (so instead of the the forks on the handles looking like this: || they look like this: \/ but that happened to the BM bali's with SS handles and even then after many years of hard manipulation)

The pins on cheapies break 95%, some within an hour or 2, some it took a couple months, some folks get a good batch/bali that has pretty good pins and they haven't broken yet, but that seems to be a rare occurence.

I dont know if it was the knife or the amount of times I dropped it, but my two rostfrei's with skeletonized holes always ended up having the bite handle crack on the top hole. I think that's just from the stress and everything. the handles start touching each other (the aformentioned pinching)after a week or less. the pins on mine lasted about a month (give or take). I actually managed to just glue them back in with 2-part epoxy and they didnt give me any further trouble.

Jag's have a longer life even though they are kind of cheap. The handles have touched a few times on mine, but some bashing with the hammer on the pins fixed the problem. The pins usually crap out pretty quickly (I believe because of the weight of the handles) but they arent hard to replace. Once they're replaced, it works a lot better.

And my BM42 shows no signs of wear at all. If it did, i'd just have to tighten up the screws and i'd be all set

I think the lifespan of the typical "Rostfrei" balis are longer than that of the Jags. I also think they are easier to manipulate than Jags. I've had both of them break on me (pin-wise), and I've also crapped a bunch of them up. As with Filipino handmades.. I'm afraid to manipulate them! Just my personal opinons, though.

a balisongs approxamit time of lasting is 893 hours,34 minutes and 14 seconds.

Where can I buy the Rostfrei balisongs? I'm just about to order a couple of Jaguars from www.allblackbelt.com, they cost only 20 bucks there, compared to 29 bucks at knifezilla.com... where do you people shop?
