Perhaps a dumb question, but is imported dried fruit inspected by anyone before it reaches consumers? I'm guessing other countries (Turkey, Pakistan) have different regulations and standards on what's considered safe and what isn't.

Thanks.

The FDA's job is to see that all food is safe for us to eat. Sadly they have not done their job , not even close . Research the Chinese milk scandal ! The Chinese have just executed a couple of people involved with that . This case involved substandard milk to which was added melamine so the tests used would show it passed the protein standards. Many items using those milk products were exported showing up in candy etc.
Yes the exporting countries usually have some standards if their 'FDA' does it's job.
One item you'll find in many products today is pesticides ,even in domestic products. All supermarkets use them and those chemicals have gotten worse with time and more use 'carriers' which carry the pesticide through most packaging and penetrating right into the center of things like potatoes or melons !! We live in a chemical soup and the result is an ever increasing rate of all immune system problems - cancer, allergies, autoimmune system things like MS.
Anyway Turkish apricots are the best I've ever had.

Wow, the dried Turkish apricots are exactly what I had in mind. I wonder if washing them would help. Too bad there aren't a whole lot of organic choices where I live. :(

Chinese milk whatz up with that, might try to dry your own, made dad had tried this it works takes a little extra time..

to be as safe as you can id suggest a food dehydrator. takes a little time (couple days) but you know exactly what it is and where it came from. i like to dehydrate mango in strips and chew it like my pup does rawhide :)

After a personal experience with cadmium poisoning from Chinese pine nuts sold at Costco, my advice is stay away from any imported raw food.
