I was watching this fascinating clip on youtube (nice music), and I was curious about the greasy stuff (lanolin?) being applied by the gentleman, apparently to select locations on his body.

Assuming he didn't spread it later, are these locations more sensitive to heat loss, or is he also addressing other issues like friction?

Thanks. :)

It only appears to be applied to joints and areas that move. I would assume it is for friction. A bad blister could have stopped his attempt if he was wearing away at his skin. The fact it is mainly on his neck and shoulders where his head would be rotating for every breath seems to go along with this. A little stubble would become pretty irritating after awhile.

I doubt that thin of a layer would provide much heat retention from the cold water.

I was expecting the music to tell more of a story and become more 'bright' as he neared the shore. After the storm kinda thing.

I would be curious to know how many calories he consumed during the swim.

Cold water swimmers do it for insulation but apparently it's a bit of a myth
and makes little difference. The fat needs to be under the skin not on it.
