Hi fellas.New member here. I posted this on General ,and someone suggested I post it here. I am interested in the Buck 55. How is it for an EDC, camping, and just good ol' pocketknife? Does it sharpen up good like the other Buck 420 HC blades ? The cheapest one I can find in my neck of the woods is Wal-Mart for about $39.

Thanks,

Pete

Pete,

Its a nice knife and a lot of folk EDC it. Buck 420hc is very good EDC steel. It sharpens easily and holds a decent edge. I like the steel:thumbup: That said a 55 is not a camping knife in my opinion. Why don't you try the 55's big brother the 110 for camping. If you're concerned about weight then a Vantage Pro or Avid.

I owned the 55 for a bit and eventually gave it to a friend as its just to small for me but it is a quality small knife and perfect for those that prefer a that size knife or are legally limited.

Hi Pete,

I agree with Gordon, the 55 is a very nice knife. However, a camp knife need to be larger than the 55. The 55 is a nice gentleman's knife for office type carry IMHO (I EDC large knives so I may be bias). The 110 would be better for a camp knife and you can get one at wal-mart for the price of the 55.

Here is a photo 111 -VS- 55 (111 & 110 are the same size knife)

Welcome Pete!

Yep, what those gents, FL & JB, sais.
I like my 55...but it stays on my desk as a "fiddle with" knife. I use it for small things around the house.

Wish I had a pic with the 55, 110, and a 112 for comparison. The 112 is a GREAT knife if you think the 110 is too big...actually, it stands by itself as a great knife. Just saying it may be a good "just right" fit for your needs.

If a true pocket knife is what you are after, the 55 is that. But small. Maybe a 500 or 300 series?

Here's a 110 compared to a 55.

IMHO, its not a question of either / or. You need all three: 110, 112, and 55. This set is just a basic single blade folder series of small, medium, and large, that gets added to with smaller, larger, fancy and plain additions. Of course, your always going to want other classes of EDC, such as fixed blade, multi blade, spec purpose, etc. but generally speaking these 3 will go nicely with whatever outfit your wearing. Around the shop any useful knife will work, from the Bucklites to the Bucktools. But if'n your stepin' out, great care must be used. For instance, if your wearing a tie, the 500's are great, from a 525 with a Tux, or a 505 with a suit to a 503 with a sports jacket. Overalls on the other hand absolutely require a 300 series, anything else will get you busted by the fashon police. The casual sweater look demands a nice folder on your belt with Stag or Elk scales and a Damascus blade just whispers "class". Naturally, if your toten a pistol in a belt holster a fixed blade is required to give a balanced look. So, get over to the Buck Factory page and start gettin', one each to start with, all the while keepin' an eye out for those old classics. There isn't a one that you don't need.

Ok fellas. I'll go get it. As a camp knife < I mean to use it when I'm riggin tarps for line cutting, cos it's a handy size. I don't have the 110 or 112, but I got a 119 ( leather shth), an old 422 valox cp, whittaker metro, minibuck black, 301 Slippy, and I'm probably missin' a few. Damn ! Lost my PE solitaire a few years ago;ripped EVERYTHING apart lookin for it: No luck. Final conclusion was maybe my kid threw it out by mistake, but I could be wrong. Might find it when I'm somewhat older. To get over this trauma, I HAD to buy another knife; It was the right thing to do , ( Nature abhors a vacuum ! )

hiwa the 422 is the same as a 112 but in lighter valox...
if you like it the 112 is great also
there is another buck light seriers out
some like them like me some dont .. real mixed on those
but there is a 110 size = 486
and two smaller ones one like a 112 one a tad smaller

the 55 is a nice church carry or one to keep in the desk
it is also a category that is new collectible for show
i have not seen a 55 display as yet..
and as of now it is still possible to get them all! ;)

Sounds like you're well prepared Pete, you'll like the 55, it's a strong solid pocketknife. I keep mine mostly for food use when I'm not home-meaning I don't cut anything nasty with it, I have my Rush on me for that!
