Here goes: why were the larger Becker handles not simply downsized for the tweeners? The thing that's most impressed me about the full-sized models is the functional guard and pinky hook present in them (also why I don't understand the secondary guards on the 7, 9, and 10). And yet, the tweeners have entirely different handles. Just curious.

What makes the large handles so great is that they are shaped so perfectly and fit most people's hands perfectly as well. Simply making them smaller would, IMO, have ruined that.

The tweeners (IMO again) feel just as good if not better than the full sized ones. They still have the pinky hook and the guard, it's just not really noticeable until you get it in hand because they aren't as pronounced as in the full sized.

if you shrink the full size grip down to 3/4 size, the space between the pinky hook and guard gets short enough most folks can only get 3 fingers in there -- some of us, only 2.....
the tweener grips are fine - especially if you add some spacers to thicken them up just a little bit.

+1 on the spacers. I just made a set from a old plastic bucket. They really improve the grip; I have larger hands and they now fit very well.

I'm speculating, but perhaps another reason why the handles are different is the tweeters simply aren't intended to be large enough for major chopping. The larger grips pinky hook give more grip when heavy steel's flying.

I think each handle design has it's purpose. The big swells at the top and bottom of the large beckers makes sure you have a secure grip when chopping or pommeling and work well for different grips.

The tween we handles give a lot more control for fine work and let you grip near the top differently. There's no need for the exaggerated swells because you won't be chopping with the small blades and those swells would probably even get in the way for certain things.

This is just what I've found in my meager experience.

Im currently tracking down some old xbox game cases - should make some nice green liners (may consider looking for one of those purple ones that Sony had for a while too)

Best Buy sells packs of translucent colored DVD cases. Five or six color options per pack.
