I've owned a few Schrade knives in my life, but I'm new to Schrade collecting. Was the 165OT ever made in stainless (Schrade+). Thanks.

Yes. Well, the pattern was. It was used for quite a few special factory orders and limited editions after it was discontinued from standard production. During it's production in the Old Timer lineup, the bladestock was traditionally 1095HC, and during production in the Uncle Henry lineup, the bladestock was stainless. While the pattern was not catalogued and advertised much after the early 1990's, the pattern was used as late as 2004.

Cool. I'm looking for a 1095 version so it sounds like all I need to do is avoid Uncle Henry and Limited Editions (Ducks Unlimited et al).

Right. And the Taylors. Unless that is what you want. IIRC, the Taylor knives are stainless too. You have to look carefully at them to tell them from the real Schrades, particularly if the seller does not state the origin. Most will, but not all.

By the way RAS, if you go for the one I am bidding, you will pay too much for a user.

I paid more than I could afford, but not a bad price, considering. This particular knife is an example of the exception to the rule. This one was sold with no tang stamp at all, if the seller is correct. I also have a 15OT that was sold this way.

Other than the fable that it was provided to the CIA as a sterile fighting knife, what reasons can you fellows imagine for knives being made and sold with no tang stamps?

Thanks sorry about running the price up a tad. Should have checked here first, but decided to make a small play on it after getting back from work. Didn't realize that was you until I checked over here. Without the stamps I wasn't too sure about that knife, maybe a second and the seller wasn't sure what the steel was -- not a good sign. Glad to hear it went to a good home, hope it's what you wanted.

Yeah, all I'm looking for is a user, but not stainless and definitely not a Taylor made knife.

No need to apologize for bidding on a knife that interests you. It is a public auction and people from many nations buy there. I don't feel bad about loosing a knife (like the FIRST PRODUCTION 165OT NIB HINGED BOX WITH STONE), and as I said, this particular one holds my interest specifically because it is unstamped. It is possible it was a second, but I don't think so. A second generally has at least a defaced stamp. My best guess at this point is that it was one of the knives held in stock for warranty replacement. By leaving off the stamp, it would be possible to use it to replace a Schrade, Wards, Sears, or other stamped knife. It may have even has an etched stamp at some point. One of my 15OT's has an etched stamp. I am also guessing that the lack of stamp was a put off to many unsure bidders, causing it to go for such a reasonable price.

You'll find you 165OT shortly, I am pretty sure. They aren't as common on eBay as most of the Old Timer slipjoints, but there is a fairly steady parade of them in all conditions.

I bought a few Old Timer slipjoints before they went out of stock. My favorite was the 194OT Gunstock Trapper and the 96OT Bearhead Trapper, so I bought a couple before the USA stock was depleted. I carried my first Gunstock Trapper in the knife pocket of my flightsuit when I was active duty. It's always nice to have a knife you know is sharp for doing small thing. Whatever.
