Ok, my understanding of the Alox Soldier is that the main blade and tools are more robust than the usual. I was wondering if the Farmer or any other knives had the same, more robust knife/tools.

Yes, they do. Although the newer Pioneers and Farmers that I have seen have had thinner blades than my late 90's Pioneers so if you have an older Soldier you might find that it's blade is thicker.

Is the number on the blade of the Soldier it's "birth"date?
Thanks
James

So just to make sure I understood SRC's response - newer alox models seems to have thinner (normal) blade while the older ones have beefier/thicker blades? Does this pertain to all alox models? o.O

Yes, but on the whole Pioneer line (Soldier, Farmer, Electrician, etc.) they are still thicker than the blades on the 91mm cellidor models.

While beefier than the main blades on the celidor knives, the Farmer/Soldier main blade remains very sheeple friendly. I know from experience they're office/in-law/etc. friendly.

I was more interested in an excuse to pick up an Alox SAK than worrying about what people think. =P

Ok, speaking of an excuse to buy an Alox SAK, here's a question for those who know better:

How much thinner is the Farmer vs. the Hiker, if at all? I was thinking of picking one up to slip into the AMK PSP (the Doug Ritter model) pouch. The Hiker seems like it'd be a fairly tight fit, though.

The Farmer would be the thinner of the two. It's roughly the same thickness as a two layer cellidor model (Tinker, Spartan)

I looked at my 6 Soldiers (1985 thru 2002), 3 Wenger SI's, 4 old Pioneers, 1 new (1999) Pioneer, 1 new Farmer, 1 old electrician.

The main blade, can opener and awl were all ,the same thickness. The cap lifter/screw driver on the 1985 1994 Vic soldier and the 1992 Wenger SI was thicker than on all the rest.

Thanks

Good info, William, thanks.

I'm thinking I'll pick up a Farmer next. If the wife doesn't beat me for the other SAKs I've been buying lately. =)

I snagged two Cadets at Target on Friday, and just ordered a Midnite Minichamp off Amazon for cheap. The Farmer should round things out nicely. Maybe a Soldier (or three), too, since it's being discontinued.

You can't go wrong with the farmer , for most with large hands , it feels better than the Soldier .
