In light of the great demand for BM 42's, and the resurging popularity of the balisong (butterfly knife), I was wondering if any mfgrs. were toying with the idea of creating a competative option to the BM? There has been a good interest shown in the blade discussion area, the bali forum, and in a possibly poorly placed debate over at the BM forum. There is quite apperently a market, especially for those companies catering to an online buying pool. So, what do you think?

It is illegal to import butterfly knives into the US. Since all our products are imported we are not interested to develop these knives. I do however own several butterfly knives in my collection.

The legal status of butterfly knives under US federal law is perfectly unclear. Some people have been been told by some authority figures that they're illegal to import, but if they're illegal to import then they're illegal to sell to mere civilians in interstate commerce, just like switchblades. Same statute.

Meanwhile, the PRC-POS butterfly knives are openly imported and sold all over the place (but not in California), so I guess not all customs officers in all ports agree that a balisong is an Evil Gravity Knife under the switchblade act.

State laws and court interpretations on balisongs and the priority level given to them by law enforcement also vary widely.

So they ain't flat-illegal to sell in most of the USA, but there's enough of an open question that spending a lot of money on tooling and development of a quality imported balisong would be a bit of a risk.

TN state law specifically names Butterfly knives as legal. Ain't that sweet!
