QC?

Help. First Benchmade, now Emerson is reputed to have lousy QC. What's a guy to do? Is there any mass manufactured knives safe to buy or all they all hit and miss?
I haven't had an Emerson or Spyderco and my few BM have been good. What's a guy to do that has to stretch to buy a $150 knife? I can't afford to buy a lousy knife for that much and that any more I spend, I hesitate to use it! Any dealers that'll inspect before shipping?

Do it right,or not at all.

Riley,

I'm sure you'll get the same advice over and over again. Pick a dealer with a good reputation and you won't go wrong. If there's a QC problem with a knife, a good dealer will take it back and replace it.
Try the dealers who support BF. I like Chai Cutlery and Knife Outlet. I'd go for OneStop but the rats won't ship outside the US!

I haven't had any QC problems with Spyderco, Benchmade, Camillus or Emerson. Maybe I've been lucky.

From my own personal experiences and for what it's worth:
High end, Chris Reeve knives leave the shop perfect !

Production: It's hard top beat Buck's QC for the price and their customer service is the best.

Puma puts out quality for the price with some unique and useful designs.

Benchmade is hit or miss. The last MB I bought, I sent back. The good dealer did so, no problem.

Spyderco's QC seems to be consistent and they have good products but I think more bang for the buck can be had if you value function and durability over style.

My failure to mention other brands is not a deliberate omission, but rather silence due to lack of experience.

That's my $.02

Hi Tomm,

Read ALL the posts about BMs and Emersons. You'll find that MOST of people are actually happy with their knives (me being one of them). Out of the rest MOST got their problems fixed.

Regardless, as Roger said, bet on the right horse and pick a good dealer.

You've heard the term "silent majority?" I think it fits here. The very, very vast majority of Benchmade and Emerson knives are defect free when they ship from the factory. What one reads about, though, are the exceptions. We have sold literally 1000's of Benchmade and Emerson products and have had only a handful or so returned for quality problems. I wouldn't worry about it.

Someone above mentioned Chris Reeve and he's right. One of the reasons you pay a high price for Reeve knives is 100% quality control. Every one does leave the factory perfect. Take care.
