I just bought a Scrimshaw single blade folding hunter. Also it is a liner lock. The depiction is of two buffalo on the handle. It is stamped S.C.C. US . It came in a black box with the papers and a black sheath. The box has SC-500. Can Codger or someone tell me the approximate date and if it is ss or carbon. It has no stains or rust. I would guess the date to be mid '70's. I know it's subjective but does $45.00 seem like a good price?

The list of scrimshaws that I use shows a 500SC in 1979-1986.
And I have BISON listed for 1979.

Should come with a sheath. If you have the sheath, box and paperwork, sounds like you got a bit of bargain if the shipping was standard.

CONGRATS!! Howie

Here's a link to the 1979 catalog on Larry's great site. It shows the knife and sheath you are referring to:

Price is subjective but I think you did pretty well. Maybe you could buy it for 20 bucks in 1979 (msp $25.00) but that's a long time ago. I should think it is carbon not stainless because it's early and no "Schrade+" designation (correct me if I'm wrong guys).

Yes I did get the sheath box and paper work. No shipping. Bought at a local gun show straight out at 45.00, no tax. Were these carbon steel? Thanks for the info Howie and Dave

For those interested here is the original Scrimshaw Buffalo block for that 1979 500SC Large Linerlock with the Great American Outdoors set...Schrade put a ding in the Scrimshaw <very heavy metal> block so it could not be further used..<see how its the reverse of the finished Scrimshaw>..from the Schrade Factory Sale.....Hoo Roo

Larry, that stamp is interesting. I have a two-blade hunter (the 508-SC) with exactly the same handle as Winchester 73's, and tang stamp 261-SC, which was from the first two years of the scrim's. This of course is non-catalog; probably put together for the auction. On the other hand, there was another legitimate Bison two blade 508-SC issued in 1982, and here it is.

When I bought this knife it did not have any sign of oil on it. what surprises me is for a knife 30 or so years old, no rust at ll. With no oil how can this be?
