Did a quicky walk today. Came across 8 bodies, most partially eaten. Mallard ducks and a couple of Canada Geese. Rather strange! All located within a diameter of about 10 m.

My theory - we had a big snow dump about a week and half ago. I suspect this flock of birds were taking cover for the night in the prairie and they got stumbled upon by a pack of coyotes. No other big predators here besides cats. Any other thoughts?

Hawks or owls maybe? I would think a coyotes would have ate everything.

Lots of redtail's in this area. Wouldn't think they'd tackle a Canada goose though. Also, can't see a hawk going all blitzkreig on a flock like that....Whereas dogs will kill for the fun of it...I think they just got full.

maybe the snow killed em and something just scavenged them?

Could be, but we have pretty mild winters here. A mallard that dies in Windsor due to environmental conditions probably deserves to be taken out of the gene pool....

You would be surprised. We had one hawk kill a chicken. Now mind you, this
was a very small species of hawk that usually goes for song birds. It weighed
only 13 oz. The chicken it killed weighed 4 1/2 pounds. It executed this all in
a closed in area around the chicken coop. It definitely did not take it from the
air. If we hadn't of caught it in a net, I am inclined to think it would have left
a similar mess.

However, I think that those birds froze and were later on attacked by some
scavengers, could be vultures. You might have scared them off. :D

Cannot tell, but did the birds looked pulled apart by a beak?

I got a theory......

a duck hunter bagged a bunch of ducks, stashed them in the snow to keep them cool while he attended to something (maybe an injury or truck repar??? i dunno) and then forgot where he stashed them.
:D

If you got a freezing rain at the end of a snow storm like we had several times this year, it is possible they got frozen in. Then died or were killed and eaten.--KV

Ive seen what's left of several wild turkey hens that were caught on their spring nest and eaten by coyote's. All they ate were the breast and eggs.--KV

We came across a similar situation, except they weren't eaten. About 12 in a pile, rotten.
I am thinking poachers who did not want to get caught. I your case, then the dead birds were scavaged. Where we live coyotes do not leave much.

The weird thing is that this is about 2 km from the river. I don't think its poachers, nor would they likely nail a goose if bagging all those mallards. If they want a goose, they could just strangle it with one hand while feeding with another.

Frozen kill might be likely given the weird storms and also the fact that this is a bit of a ways from open water.

Looks like a classic case of alien mutilation. Sadly this appears to be the cause of most interstellar trips to earth. Well that and crop circles. Beyond that maybe weather? Lots of winter kill around my parts as we had a bunch of snow this season.

I have seen Pelrins in my area hunt gease, this would be no surprise to me. I remember a man who had one in captivity where I was working this summer, he would walk in his corn field, and scare the gease/duck so they would take off while the Pelrin would attack them in mid air, circle way up there. while it was waiting. Pretty cool sight.
