Friday I decided to take the plunge on a bigger khukuri. I have used a 15" AK by Bura for the last 4+ years and wanted to see how a bigger one would feel. The DOTD three days before was a beautiful tin chirra that looked just like the angles of my AK, only at 18" with a full tang and three fullers.....at only 115$. I emailed Auntie and within 15 minuets it wax paid for and she was off to the post office .....crazy fast customer service!
Imagine my surprise when the mail lady dropped off my package .....today! Literally less that three days and over a weekend at that to travel half the country, amazing.
I am a knife maker and use almost no power tools to forge my blades, my standards for a knife are very high and I was take quality very serious. This tin chirra was far and beyond my expectations, the high polish on the 12 1/4" blade is beautiful, smooth as silk. The triple fullers are perfect and equal and make me giddy when they catch the light. The grip is very comfortable even with the wooden scales shrinking from the desert of Reno. The quality of the wood itself is fantastic and there is curl and ribbon in the grain.
But all is for not if the blade don't cut, so off to the forest we went.
The first thing was to get rid of a medium size Elm on the edge of the yard that overhangs where we park. In very short order this blade cleaved out large wedges of the wood and the tree toppled. I love to chop and have used many different types of chopping blades (mostly khukuri styles) none compared to the ease of this one. Next up was a large fallen Blackjack Oak, considered a trash tree because it ruins chainsaw chains, they literally throw sparks! The outside was rotten but just underneath was grain so hard I could not make an indention in it with my thumbnail. I started wailing on the log, trying to dent, roll or chip the shaving edge on the sweetspot of the blade. Also feeling the grip, seeing if I could detect any future hotspots. After chopping all the way to the center of the log there were no hotspots nor were there and dents, rolls or chips! Then I sliced thru two free hanging leaves with the huge blade, half the leaves fell to the ground instantly.
Honestly I could not be happier, this is so much more than what I just had even hoped for. Yangdu, thank you and the kamis for such a fantastic product and amazing customer service!!! This khukuri has a home for life.
