Are there any BM stores where I can walk in and get my hands on a:

Gransfors Bruks
Wetterling
Council Tool
Snow & Nealy
or
Huskvarna

brand axe? I want to walk in and see a "full size" single bladed chopping axe. If I like what I see, I'm in the market for one. My Gransfors Bruks Small Forest Axe needs a big brother, of similar quality.

I'm completely sick of the bad selection of crap axes around here (read that "$30 Chinese axes").

In a perfect world, I'd walk out with a Scandinavian Forest Axe. BTW, does Husky even belong in the above list?

THANKS

OK, I admit defeat in this thread. Quality axes cannot be purchased in a brick and mortar store in California's central valley.

While I have to admit I haven't looked for high dollar axes around here, if I was so inclined there's one place I'd go first. National Hardware over on North Blackstone. If they don't have it, they might know where to get it. If can't help, well I just don't know.

I live in Portland, OR and I've entirely given up on local stores for such needs... heck, just looking around for replacement handles for some vintage axe heads I'm restoring has been impossible - all poor quality with terrible grain structure, lots of heartwood, and overly varnished. A complete axe? Ha - I wouldn't even try...

Your best bet is to find a reputable online dealer and ask them to handpick you quality ones. Feel free to email me if you'd like to know who I use :)

Yes - Husqvarna makes some nice axes, though they do switch between manufacturers... according to cegga, who lives in Sweden, it's been made by Gransfors Bruks, Hults Bruk, and Wetterlings in the past but a few heads have also been made in China.

IMO, the most questionable one on your list is actually Snow & Nealy as their quality has gone down tremendously since they've entirely moved their manufacturing to mexico and china...

I walked into National Hardware last year. I walked out with a 3 1/2lb Jersey pattern axe. For a cheap axe(about $30), I feel it is an OK, if indifferent axe. Frankly, my Gransfors Bruks has spoiled me for cheap axes, and I'm not buying any more of 'em, knock on wood.

Thanks for your help, gentlemen.

Got your email and replied to it, but it seemed to have failed. Perhaps you have the wrong email address tied to your BF account?
