I actually like the black bear. It and some loveless designs made me want to give them a go in the first place. I've seen some carbon v OSS by cold steel but the ODA i got seems kinda thin so I'm wary.Cold Steel's Black Bear Classic is well thought of, sometimes you can luck into them in mint condition for that much or a little more. The Boker Kessler can sometimes be found in the $200 - 300 range.
Smith and Wesson made a model in the $50 - 60 range that was well though of, it's was called the SWLBH that looked like -

They've jumped up, but maybe you could find one.
Cold Steel also offered/offers the Marauder and OSI as utility subhilts.
Black Jack offered a Randall #1 style subhilt in the 90's that sells for $200 - 300 in mint condition now, but I didn't like the feel, the tigger hilt faces the wrong way.
As mentioned, Subhilts don't lend themselves to being made well and cheap.
