I was looking at 1x6 electroplated diamond plates, particular for coarse grits such as 80-200 but also for medium grits such as 400-600.

I was wondering if the higher end plates like atoma are worth it over the cheaper AliExpress diamond plates?

Also I was wondering what is the best 1x6 options on the market? I know the atoma full size plates are really good, but for some reason the 1x6 atomas are more expensive than the 8x3 ones. I have heard some people cutting the larger ones to size but I am unsure the best way to do this.

Anyone have any recommendations?

The only ones I have used are the ones CKTG sells. They have worked and held up well. Mine are 140, 400, and 1000 grit. The set he sells now are 120, 400, and 1000 grit, But I see no reason to believe they wouldn't work just as well as the ones I have. He also sells Atoma 1X6 plates and Edge Pro diamond matrix stones, But I have not needed to try them.

O.B.

electroplated plates work for coarse grain sizes, because there's single layer of diamonds, which do not self-sharpen, when cracked during sharpening
finer grains will scratch surface, because electroplated bond itself is hard
cost depends on diamond powder quality, if it's sieved properly, cost may be higher, but not much
plates should be priced at the bottom of the market, comparing to metal or resin bond stones, because 1x6 plates contain much less powder than 1x6 stones

Ive used the cheap ali express diamond plates. They work but they wear out pretty fast if you are re-profiling in my experience.
I recently purchased a Jende 120 diamond plate. I was impressed with the quality. Has some weight to it and it’s a full size 6x1 stone. Worked great. Can’t speak to longevity as I’ve only used it once so far, but it seems like it will hold up to use.

Chinese 1x6 plated stones have about 5 cents of diamond on them, maybe 12 cents if they use a high-quality feed stock that is processed well, and I am probably high. That price will increase 3 or 4 times if the diamond is purchased here in the US. The bulk of the cost is the process of applying the diamonds, the strip of steel used to put it on, and a couple of profit margins.
