i own several simmons and Nicholson files and they just don't seem to give the clean uniform cut i'm trying to get not to mention they seem to progressivly loose thier bite after each blade i work on. I'm new to knife making as i came to it just as an experiment to fill my time as my biggest hobby has always been playing pool/billiards but my fiance had back surgery so i needed a hobby at home and one that offered me a break from work and holding down the homested. So in short i'm looking for quality files and needle files that are reasonable yet offer lasting quality and if anyone one can point me in the the direction i would very much appreciate it!

Thanks

Files wear out, especially when cutting hard metals.
I use Nicholsons exclusively in my shop.
You might try diamond files, but they wear out, too.

Hi,

Nicholson is about as good as it gets for files. How long a file will last you depends on how hard the material is that you are filing, your technic in using it and how clean you get it when it needs to be cleaned.

Unless you are filing hardened steels, diamond files are next to worthless on soft steel. They tend to "plug" as the soft material sticks to the file body.

Can anyone recommend to me two or three Nicholson files to be used in sequence from super agressive, to less agressive which I can use as a first step before going to stones to use on things like machetes, camp knives,
and even some larger size high carbon knives?
