Howdy. I have this Maxpedition FR-1 mall ninja pouch I would like to turn into a first aid bag. Anyone know a good distributer that does not sell garbage from China to fill this thing up with quality tools and products? Any suggestions as to what is a necessity for FA kits?

Thanks,

Nick

Your best bet is to piecemeal(sp?) it. What goes in it is going to depend on what you want to use it for. Is it for camping/hiking, around town use, travel...?

Okay. I usually go pretty light but let's see if I can recomend something for the size you're looking at. It'll at least give you a start.
Tweezers. I carry Uncle Bill's on my keychain and would recomend it. You probably have the space to have full on tweezers though. Then buy the best you can find at the grocery store/pharmacy.
Scissors. I would go with full on medical sheers.
Bandaids. Nexcare makes the only bandaids worth a darn. The only bandaids that I actually have a hard time getting off.
Quick clot gauze availabe at rei. I'd take 2 or 3 if you hunt, shoot, 4x4 etc
Duct tape if you don't have it already. Good for keeping deep cuts together til you can have a doc irrigate and suture it.
Neosporin (sp?). They have small travel tubes
Burn ointment
Alcohol swabs. As many that will fit. These are also good for hygene
rubber gloves. I'd carry at least 2 pair
Pain killer.
Immodium. Take at least one course which is 4 pills.

I'm sure someone will chime in with something I've missed. In the end a good first aid kit is like survival gear, no 2 people are going to have the same kits.

This is what's in my urban FAK/catch-all. I agree that you should piece your kit together.

Meds:
Ibuprofen
Pepto Bismol
Dayquil
Nyquil
Gas-X
Tums
Benadryl
Zyrtec
Alka-seltzer
Emergen-C
cough drops

Ointments:
Neosporin
Vaporub
Burn gel
Sting relief wipes
Oral pain reliever
Sunscreen SPF-50
Campho-phenique

Minor first aid:
2" and 3" Gauze rolls and
2" and 3" ace bandages
Gauze pads
Quikclot
Nitrile gloves
Moleskin
Cotton balls & Q-tips
Different sized Band-aids, get some H20 ones too(I also like Nexcare band aids)
butterfly closures
Liquid skin
Tape

Misc:
Shears (I have a set of Fluoride scissors from Prestige medical) Not made is USA but still good shears
Uncle Bill's sliver grippers
Wet-ones wipes
Hand sanitizer
Bandana
Magnifying glass
Tide pen-This has been one of my favorite things to carry, super useful as I spill a lot:)
Pocket tissue and charmin TP to go
Duct tape
Bic Lighter
6-7 feet of 550 paracord
zip ties
Nail clippers
Colgate wisps

Tweezerman-great quality, reasonably affordable.
Scissors. I would go with full on medical shears.
QUALITY scissors that medics carry are the way to go-http://www.amazon.com/Prestige-Medical-Fluoride-Scissor-Black/dp/B002WJHE7E/ref=pd_sbs_ac_1

I recommend the Neosporin + Pain Relief Ointment-it does the trick, every time
Burn ointment
Alcohol swabs. As many that will fit. These are also good for hygeine
add iodine swabs to the list, it is a much better antiseptic.
Pain killer.
specifically Vicodin or Percodan if you can get your doctor to sign off on it, unless alergic and be aware of the potential for abuse, not only self, but also family members...regardless, very useful for a Saturday night injury not requiring an emergency room visit.
Immodium. Take at least one course which is 4 pills.

Crazy glue-indispensable for closing wounds that don't warrant quikclot, but won't close with a bandaid
Compazine suppositories-when you cannot stop vomiting
Ace bandages are very useful....at least one.
Heat packs take up very little room and are very useful as well.

You can find items lists all over the internet for mission specific first aid kits. Just get a good multi-section bag (I suggest the Maxpedition Neat Freak for a mid sized kit) and then go to Wal Mart and get the medical items you need. There may be a few items you'll want to buy online like medical shears and perhaps a packet of quick clot if you think you need it (be careful with that stuff). But most of the basic stuff you can get at Wal Mart.
